which one of these cpu interfaces offeres the best performance?

Performance would be the same on slot or socket. But I would think in my opinion that socket would do better cooling since it doesn't have that unecessary plastic housing around the CPU like slots do.

so it is preferable to have a socket?

I can see how the performance would be the same but I've always thought the socket seems more secure compared to the slot.

And how have you come to this conclussion?

The reason that I'd would recommend, socket over slot (although I use a slot CPU and mainboard) is that sockets are a bit cheaper than slot CPU's. Major companies such as AMD and Intel are phasing away from slot interface CPU, because the cost to make sockets are less expensive. Getting a mainboard with FC-PGA interface would be better in the long run.

performance wise, as long as the cache is on the die the performance is identical.

BUT, in terms of cooling, slot is superior (sorry NDC) due to the largest surface area, the heatplate that heat is dissipated over and the potential use of huge HS not to metnion double or triple fans.

As a proof of that, the T-Bird socker runs far warmer than the slot version. Same for the FC-PGA intels and their slot counterparts (both wirh standard retail cooling -> direct benefit of larger area + heat plate).

If you want to buy though, go for the socket as slot is now dead.

Hmmmm, no need to be sorry, Otheos http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif From my experience, I noticed that socket CPU seemd to run a bit cooler. This conclussion is just from analyzing different systems with different interface CPU's that I've come across.

But the part about the more area contact with bigger heat sink for the slot dissipating more heat does seem to make better sense. but....... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes performance is identical....

The Socket interface may be the future for CPUs, but just because they'll phase out Slot based cpus and motherboards does not mean certain manufacturers will phase out slotkets right away. Someone is already developing a Slot A to Socket A slotket which will be great for older Slot A K7 mobo owners.

If you plan to overclock with "hardcore" intentions, Slot is the way to go. There is too much hassle when you have to insulate the socket mounted straight on the mobo.

Then again if you're not going the subzero route, socket is ideal.

Just wanted to add that lil tid bit.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
