Raises the bar a little huh!

Edit- I'm sorry, I see this posted by Brockway in the Overclocking and CPU topic area http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum3/HTML/004679.html

Yeah, well, it would raise the bar a lot more if intel could deliver on their current "flagship" processors.

I swear, the media loves intel. If that didn't have subtle AMD putdowns, then shoot me.

The dif between AMD and intel is AMD could have that 1.1 ghz chip in production in two weeks if they had to, intel couldn't crank out a 1.1 en mass for a stinkin three months!

It is to be released next month and put into production in 2002 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

All I got to say is, if you want to buy an 850mhz Athlon, all you need is the money. They're out there, ready to be shipped to your door.

If you want to buy an 800mhz PIII (No 850 yet) then you not only need the money (and more of it) but you also need some major pull and a bit of luck because the few that Intel CAN produce are going to the big boys only to get bogged down in some crappy pre-built systems.

So Intel has ONE chip that can run at 1.5Ghz. When they produce a truckload (actually lots of truckloads) of them, then I'll be impressed.

I'm sure you guys know more about this. This part http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gifquote) "Willamette, which goes on sale this fall," (quote). Led me to believe that it was coming out after summer. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I worked at a company a few years back that got burned (scorched) by the Merced fiasco. The IA64 was supposed to be a godsend...it blew away everything else, and the *best* (??) part was that it was supplied by Intel.
You know the rest. Merced, nee Itanium (which is the dumbest name for anything -- it sounds like the brand name of the Jetson's car!) isn't released yet! Two-and-a-half years after we developed hardware to accommodate the gosh-darn thing, and at great expense.

1.5GHz Pentium. Don't hold your breath, or design your mobos just yet!

Might be interesting to know how much resources Intel put into producing this demo chip.
I think what will be even more interesting will be the "behind the scenes" stories that will eventually come out of the race to 1 GHz production chips ..would make for interesting reading or viewing.

I think the only "trend" you're seeing is mostly the good'ol root for the underdog routine. That's all.

And to a much more minor part, some of us do have a genuine (and legitimate mind you) dislike for Intel. Reasons are varied and too complex for my brain to deal with right now (ie after work), but "issues" range from poor/unethical business practices to just plain 'ol price gouging.

I would have to say that this story is true. The register is a known rumor mill from what I understand. The chip will be in mass prodution this fall. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-1550164.html?tag=st.ne.1002.bgif?st.ne.fd.gif.j

Although consumers won't see chips running this fast on shelves for a while,Intel will release Pentium IIIs running at 1 GHz or faster by the second half of the year as well as the next-generation Willamette chips running at the same speed, Yu said.

"Intel will release Pentium IIIs running at 1 GHz or faster by the second half of the year as well as the next-generation Willamette chips running at the same speed, Yu said.

"We will enter volume production (on the 1-GHz Pentium III chips) in the third quarter this year for performance desktops and low-end servers," Yu said, holding up one of the versions of Willamette to the audience. Yu also showed coming computers from IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Dell Computer that will contain 1-GHz Pentium IIIs.

Willamette will come out more gradually. Hundreds of thousands of the chips will come out this year, with millions to follow in 2001."

Another link saying it will be out this year. It seems to be true. http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2438666,00.html

from wut i can tell, no one is sayin the story is not true, we're just sayin
1) Chips won't debut at 1.5 ghz
2) Production levels will stink
3) Amd is better.

I must have misuderstood you. But the way you stated it made it sound like you were saying "Intel was just messin with everyone-they got nothing!" as in they were not being truthful.

Why do you guys bash Intel? I don't care if Intel or AMD makes the processor in my computer. For example, what is the difference between the much hated 750mhz (or any other speed) Pentium III and the much worshiped 750mhz AMD Athlon?? I've seen a trend on this board: If it's popular with the "non-techies", don't buy it.

Help me out here.
