I was wondering if anyone knew of any places that a person can sign up to put their own website (not Fortune City or Geocities). I'd really like to set up a web page but I need to know how much it costs.

What I was asking for was a web page where you have your own address (ie www.<page (http://www.<page) name>.com). Anyone know where to go?

Ohhhh...now a different one http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Go over to www.webjump.com (http://www.webjump.com) (they offer "virtual domains" (it will be w w w.<yourname>.webjump.com or they will help you BUY your own domain name such as mine www.mntsnow.net (http://www.mntsnow.net) and they will offer to host it for free

Thanks.

I was also wondering if there are any other alternatives so I don't have a huge banner at the top of my page.

www.cedant.com (http://www.cedant.com) Costs me 13 bucks a month and I get 25 megs space, cgi bin access and basically full control of my site. FTP access, counters and stats, etc etc. For about 20 bucks a month you get more bandwidth/space. This is a great hosting service, they answer my emails in a couple of hours max. They will help you get yourdomain.com registered with Internic and give you an ip address to use. Painless process for me. Try them.

If you want FREE you will have to live with banner ads on your website http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif if you want to PAY for hosting services there is a TON of services out there. You might look into http://www.hostsave.com/ As they charge only 6.95 a month when you pay 3 months at a time. That is where my domain name is going to be moving to shortly as I am tired of the banner ads as they kill the download times

Look here. There url thing is http://yourname.8m.com. All you have to put up with is a stupid banner. I use it for most of my web pages. Yes it is free and you get like 40megs. I suggest it.

AS much as I disdain Geocities, they work pretty good. Instead of getting the Ad square in the top right of the page, use the geoguide ad instead. It is a bigger banner, but you can stash it down at the bottom of each page with all the links and non-essential info.

Crosswinds is not bad, but they dont allow cgi scripts and they dont host your domain for free, you gotta pay month for that. Not bad for no banners though.

you could try bigstep (http://www.bigstep.com) . they are pretty good. the site format is like this:XXXX.bigstep.com, where "XXXX" would be whatever you name your site... you can easily customize your site as well... you can even sell stuff on it... they have a great marketing section to help you get your site known... if you don't yet know what you want on your site, then make a plan out and set it up to be uploaded to their site... if you have a set plan and know what you are gonna put on the site, then you can finish up your site in about an hour...

plus.... it's FREE.... though, if you want to use their merchant part, i think you pay like $10 or maybe $20 a month for it, but if you use it, then you are probably gonna make more than that per month, so big deal... and, if you don't make any sales, i believe that you get your merchant fee refunded... i'd check on that, but i believe that is so....

well, i hope this has helped....

anywayz...

Freeservers is free the link to their site is www.freeservers.com. (http://www.freeservers.com.) Sorry I forgot to give it to you. Here is a page at freeservers: http://t888.8m.com. I made that for a Boy Scout Troop. I am also working on a Java Script to delete the add when the page loads so it won't be there.

Give your own design a shot, Alondra! There are so many HTML editors and authoring tools around so pick one (hopefully all-browser compatible). You can use MSWord or Wordpad and "save at html" as a start. Or use Front Page Express that is included in Win98. If you run Netscape, try out Composer. Try out freeware on the web or jump in with both feet and purchase Fusion or Dreamweaver for all the bells and whistles. You might want to try a WYSIWYG authoring tool to start, but you will have to learn some HTML coding for tweaking.
