You know I just dont understand why some people have a hard time with AOL, Mindspring, Earthlink ect. software. I still have AOL5.0 on my daughters machine and it was on mine and never a problem. I had not a single problem using my other ISP and it never did overtake any of my settings. Hmmmm.

I know a guy who has been using AOL for nearly a year and a half....all he can do is chat with it.AOL is painfully slow on his system......but it seems AoL has used some kinda nazi mind washing device on him....he wont change from AOL to a Local ISP

I had AOL for a few years, but since I wanted more speed in my browsing, games, and downloads, I was forced into changing. If AOL would cater to high speed (ISDN, Cable, DSN etc..) I would go back with them in a heartbeat. Cant beat 7 E-Mail Addys.

My first ISP was AOL. It lasted until I burned up the free 100 hrs. My sister, mother, step mother, Grandmother, etc... still thinks it is awesome. the first thing my mom wants me to do when she gets on my computer is get her to AOL.
I agree with Hellhound. I think they did the same with my whole family.

I installed 5.0 on my machine over a month ago, just to check it out. I also have a Brother all-in-one printer that works similar to a winmodem and designates it's own COM port.

For some reason the install of AOL knocked my printer out. I couldn't reinstall or uninstall the printer software no matter how much I tried and also tried some registry changes to help complete the task-without success.

Only way out was to do a reformat...and I did not reinstall AOL. Never again!

Another little annoying feature of 5.0 was that it would fire up and go online by itself when I opened up some other programs. Bad, very bad.

I hate AOL! I never used 5.0 because I dumped them before it was released. I could probably fill 5 screens with the problems that I had with AOL. I use NT4 and they just plain don't support it! I was stuck using the 16 bit version and this brought with it a whole slew of problems and incompatabilities.
The one most memorable was when they "upgraded" the software -- I had previously been able to use Netscape as my browser but after the "upgrade". no dice!

The whole AOL concept is a GREAT idea...the implementation is out of control because of the sheer number of members. I use Mindspring now and have never, ever had a problem in the 8+ months I've been a subscriber. The difference (to me) is like night and day.

I tried out AOL out a long long time ago... I think it was version 1.4 or something. All in all, I didn't like it too much. Besides, I'm the kind who always laughs at people who use AOL... commonly attributing them as a "newbie," as well as criticizing them for slow access.

But lately I've started wondering about AOL's BYOA plan (bring your own access). I have a cable connection so bandwidth *shouldn't* be a big issue... and generally, I'd like to be able to have everything laid out for me there... guess I'm getting lazy. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Besides, I think it'd be easier for my mom to use anyway... she's always threatening to "go to AOL" if I don't teach her how to do this or that with a regular browser and email client. Also, a lot of my peers at school use it... I guess it'd be an alternative way to communicate with them.

i do tech support for ev1.net...and the customers we have that come voer from AOL are some of the slowest people we deal with...and AOL 5.0 really does seem to mess up their machines...many of em are not able to ever get web access after trying to take AOL 5.0 off their machine. various techniques for removal include regediting AOL oout of existence...or removing all modems, all network components, and all com ports on the computer and then restart and reinstall...

Chipbgt, AOL is America Online.

I believe they are still the largest ISP in the world. They recently merged with Time Warner.

They own ICQ and WinAmp, and Netscape Communicator is a product of AOL's Netscape Communications unit.

yeah, I could be foriegn like that "Bin-Ladin" fella who has been frequenting the threads lately....

Besides how fun would it have been to put a "j/k" or a http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif after that?

I choose to disavow any knowledge of aol''s existance after I fled there entrapment a few years ago....

I was computer illiterate when i got my first system. I played around with AOL at a friends house and hated it. That's when another friend who was into confusers really big, showed me what it was like using a local or nationwide service using just DUN. If ppl ask me if AOl is worth it, i tell them NO. I learn them the other way. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have been with mindspring for almost 2 years. And never once have used their software. Only DUN.

well, since i just recently moved, i had decided to give aol5 a try (since they give you a "free" month). well, it was as slow, if not slower, as its predecessors. I think the main reason why it is soooo slow is the memory consumption, but i may be wrong...

well, i just switched to using freewwweb and i love it ALOT more than AOL and it almost seems faster than my old isp, but i don't know....

you are right, Mntsnow... i don't see why some people use anything that has preinstalled software to use. yeah, maybe it gives you access to some chat rooms, but they all are horrible anyway. i can see for those who want to get started one the internet but don't know how to use it, then those are actually somewhat helpful to them.... and also some people have nothing else available for cheaper (yeah, right, but i know it is possible)... well, whatever...
