I agree with you outpatient, but since I'm totally new to this overclocking thing and need to learn everything, I was just trying to save him from having to do all the typing that would be involved in getting this amout of information to me. It's asking a lot of someone to take the time to help me and I didn't want to add to that by asking that they type it all as well.

Here is a good article (http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/rivatnt/) with most of the info you should need to overclock it. Here are a few threads that may help you also.

Ok.
I will help ya here.
The Diamond Viper V770 uses a program called TNTClk. It is meant for the TNT and TNT2 chipsets.
It has sliders that go from 100-200 for the Core, and 100-250 for the Memory.
The Viper V770 Non ultra is 125 core, and 150 Memory stock.
I am currently running at 160Core, and 210 Memory.
I am also using stock cooling, but, If I had more, I think I could get it stable at 175/220.
That would be a LOT faster than the Ultra V770, which costed almost double as this one when I got it, so I am saving a LOT of money, for getting a lot faster Graphics card.
I currently do not know if putting a heatsink on the back of the card will help, but I do know for a fact that it gets really hot, almost as hot as the main side, but I don't quite know why there isn't a heatsink on it.
Maybe because hot air rises, and they figure that the air will just rise off of it.
Overclocking the Card REALLY help is games, since the stock is mostly dependant on the video, since it is the weak link.
When not overclocked, I get about 35fps in UT, with all stats on HIGHEST settings. (I am using a P III 500@620 Processor)
When overclocked to 160 Core/ 210 Memory, I got 57fps in the same settings....
BTW, I was NOT using D3D drivers, I was using OpenGL, and people say that using Direct3D helps a lot, I really don't know, since my computer always freezes when I try to use the D3D.....
Good luck, and keep me informed!!!

or you can get the coolbits reg hack and overclock fro the display properties...

Bassically, I need to know everything. Since I'm new to this overclocking game, I would need help doing the entire proceedure. I assume (that word always gets me in trouble) there is a fan and heat sink purchase involved. Beyond that, I don't have a clue what to do. I have icq 31660202, just put your sysop.com id in the request to authorize so i'll know who you are, and thanks again for the help.

My plain (non-ultra) Viper v770 runs all the time at 166mhz/183mhz (which is quite a bit faster than it's stock 125mhz/150mhz).

Ya know, if you guys would discuss this openly and NOT privately, then there's a very good chance you could help many people (and not just one person).

OK, I found TNTClk and d/l and ran it. I went straight to 160/210 and went straight into Counter Strike to check the difference. WOW!!! my fps has gone from around 40 to 80+.
I also tried 166/183 and 175/183 but got lockups with both when I got into the game. I've temp removed my side cover and used a regular fan for increased air flow untill I can purchase a sink fan and I'm also gonna add a case fan. Thanks for the great info everyone and the informative links. I hope I can return the favor some day.
BTW, whats the stock core/mem settings on the viper 770 ultra? Just wondering.

Stock for the Ultra is 150Core/183 Memory http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif
That means that everyone here was able to pass the Ultra's stock!!

Also make sure to check this out, as it might improve your o/c'ablity by several percent:

Also here for the latest reference BIOS updates:

I had my Creative Labs TNT-2 (non-Ultra) running at 165/249 through using this technique, plus the addition of three socket7 sized fans. Not bad for a card with a base of 125/150 (just like the v770).

249! Geeeesh. You must have some quality memory chips on that sucka. I have crappy chips, no doubt. I cannot get my memory speed over 183 no matter what I do.
It's ashame my memory chips aren't better because I've been able to get my core up to 195 without lockups.

I have been able to get my mem up to 215 stable.......
Core won't go above 165 tho http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
you can get a larger heat sink for the core and some cache sicks for the memory and you will be able to get much higher. I have the ultra and I am able to get 183 core and 230 memory but it gets too hot for my likeing.

WOW!!! So much info for a rookie to absorb in such a short time LOL. I'll ask this question and go read up on the info posted since my last. There seems to be some way/rhyme&reason that you know taking the core higher than the mem or vice versa is actually no gain. Is there some formula you guys go by or are you running trial and error type experiments or what? I know most of you are running some program or something that gives you a base to get a common fps measurement. All I know to do at this point is go into a game and check my fps in there. This whole experience is really getting to be quite an education. Thanx to all.

Yeah, someday, I am gonna mount a P II heatsink on my vid card, and get some chips for the ram.
All I do to see if it is stable, is to go into UT, with the fps on, and run for 15 mins, if it works, I bump it up some more, if not, then I drop it down 5, and am happy with it.

I lucked out, as my Creative Labs card had decent quality SG-RAM instead of the default SD-RAM. Before I applied the reference BIOS modification, the best I could run stable was 160/200.

Well I guess I should count myself lucky that I can get to 160/210 but when I tried to use vgabios and one of the newer ver bios on my viper770 it wouldn't let me get any where near the 160/210 without immediate lockups. I even tried 2 differnt ones just in case but no luck with either. I guess it's like the article says, "known probs with some viper 770's" even though it said ultra and mines not an ultra. Thanx for the tip just the same, it was deffinately worth a try.
