I've got a K6-2 500 currently OCCed to 550 at 2.3 volts (and nearly stable at 2.2). Since I'm such a small amount above core voltage I figured I'd try 600--but not even 2.6 volts has been enough to boot the machine at that speed. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would a burn-in help? (I'm not exactly sure what one is).

i think it'd work. Try burning in volt by volt. I got my system to work (500@571) with only 2.3v. It died (started crashing, but i didn't kill the CPU) of course in like 10-20 minutes... but I burned it in at 2.3v for a pretty long time. Never tried 2.4 since now my dad has my K6-2.

So what are you saying? Burn at 2.3 for a while, then try 600 at 2.3? If that doesn't work, burn at 2.4--then try 600 at 2.4?

Also, if I'm going to have voltage problems at a certain setting, when will I know? I've been running Quake II and III on this machine for quite some time--it hasn't burped yet.

you should be able to run up to 2.7 votls pretty safely with adequate cooling. i have a chip (k6-2 400) i ran at 2.7/2.9@475/496 volts for a long time and had no problems

Well this motherboard doesn't appear to have a temp sensor and my thermometer is busted--so at the moment I've got a Golden orb slapped on there w/thermal paste and the machine itself is in a 70' room. I'm trusting that it'll stay cool enough.

I'm not willing to run above 2.6 at the VERY most. So does burning in help a machine run better @ higher voltages?

you got much better cooling thatn i was using at 2.9 only had rjdj k601 on mines...

It sounds like you'd be alright at 2.7v. So much depends on your ambient room temperature and humidity, this time of year. I run mine at 2.7v 600, in the winter, but backed it off to 550 for the summer.

Well I guess that's my question...if I take the time to burn this CPU in, will it give me a better chance of hitting 600 on a lower voltage?

I should have gone into more detail...
My 500 wouldn't hit 600 at any volage until I lapped it. I actually burned in at 2.8v. But now it runs at 550 w/ only 2.1v.

Hey, if anybody has some temp readings using a golden orb on a K6... Post some stats please.

I'll give you mine, though this was with a 400 OCCED to 500. My room is low humidity and stays about 70-72' Fahrenheit.

Running RAIN, at rest: 25.1' Celsius.
Running RAIN, Full Load: 32' Celsius.

At Rest, No Rain: 27' Celsius
Full Load, No Rain: 35' Celsius.

I had a Golden Orb, an exhaust fan sitting on one side of the processor sucking air back into the power supply (which pushed it out all together) and a case fan in front blowing cool air straight toward the power supply. Basically looked like this:

<-----0000000<--------

The 0000's are the heatsink/fan.

Oh yes: I'm not taking this thing above 2.6 V. I can't afford to blow it.
