I have a ASUS P2B-DS motherboard which has a 100FSB, and I will receive two (2) PIII 550 MHZ, 100 Mhz, 512 Cache tommorro. Kinda new to the game, so is this combination able to be overclocked?

Kinda new to the game, so is this combination able to be overclocked? Target 07-17-2000, 11:53 AM Reports here earlier have listed the PIII-550 E's to be very good over-clockers. If that is what you have, and your board supports FSB speeds in excess of 100Mhz, then your chances are pretty good I'd say. Roy 07-17-2000, 02:02 PM The PIIIs with 512MB L2 cache are not "E"s. They overclock, but not quite as well because the L2 speed is 1/2 core speed, not 1x. MBCArchangel 07-18-2000, 06:55 AM Thank you for the post, I am a little confused about what the difference between a 550E, 550, and processors with an A behind them mean. I found a post once that sort of explained, but I'm unable to find it now. Is the 550 with 100MHz, and 512 cache considered a 550E Target 07-18-2000, 09:31 AM Good catch Roy....I glazed right over that 512 cache statement. Between the topic and the body discussing different CPU's, I guess I missed it. Anyway MBC, as Roy correctly stated, your 550 is not of the "E" variety, and though it will not over-clock all that well, it will still likely do some above spec. MBCArchangel 07-18-2000, 09:36 AM Thanks guys, I just got the cpu's in and have been able to get them to run at 617@112Mhz with 5.5 core voltage. Will have to see it runs stable or not. Roy 07-18-2000, 04:26 PM EEEK! I hope that 5.5V core voltage is a typo! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif [... nice 'clocking! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif] SysOpt.com
