My p3 733 cpu is running at 45-47 deg. celsius under load. I'm thinking this may be too hot, but I'm not sure. I've noticed an increase in temp since I bought a voodoo5 5500 agp video card. I have no clue what this increase is a result of, but I used to OC it to 825 through the front side bus by cranking it up to 150 from 133. I put it back to 133 when I got the V5 (didn't want to chance cooking the card). Things nonetheless have been a little hotter in my computer lately, and I'm wondering if these are safe levels, because I'm considering trying the fsb at 150 again. Is this a safe setup? Will I cook my cpu, and / or brand spanking new voodoo5? Thanks for any help.

dont really know but thats a lot of computer to burn up for a bit of extra juice dont make blind adj or you will pay to the god of death Blue screen !

All I know is that temps are ok at the moment, you might wanna improve case ventalation and processor cooling (r u using thermal paste?) if you wanna o/c http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

P3 Cumines tend to **** out @ the 50*c mark.

Mine hangs or crashes back out to Windows when the temp reaches 50*c. 47*c @ 733mhz is a wee bit high.

Is that 733mhz CPU a EB proc or did you overclock it to that speed? What voltage are you running it at and what kind of cooling solution are you using?

Don't worry, the CPU won't cook, it'll just crash and let ya know its too hot and needs to chill out http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks guys... Plucky duck, the p3 is a legitimate 733, which I stepped up to 825 by the fsb increase from 133 to 150. No additional cooling measures, though I have taken to removing one side of the case to improve airflow. I haven't messed with the voltage at all, as I think this could be a real good tool to unleash the smack-down on my system if I mess it up. I'll check what it is and post it here later. The 45-47 degrees is at the stock speed of 733 (no OC), which is why I'm a little puzzled. Thanks again. Right now I'm leaning with "sunofwolf", and thinking the extra speed gain isn't worth chancing giving my cpu a nice bronze "tan".

Im thinking the extra heat is coming from the Voodoo 5.Does it have any fans on it? My Voodoo 3 runs hotter than He**,i had to put a fan on it, it almost burned the fingers when touched.

pretty sure the voodoo5 does, the pic for the 6000 showed like 4 friggin fans(which blow right into the cpu on some mobos)

I had a P3 500 taken from my Dell.
I placed it into my illy case and Abit BE6-II. The temperature was nutz with a crappy Dell Heatsink. I remember it reaching 90C... I almost croaked. I finally releazed that the Dell's to save money used a wind-tunnel design to help cool off the CPU.
Since then I have purchased a Golden Orb Heatsink/Fan. And I use Thermal Compound. (Getting some Artic Cool Stuff (Silver)). The temps now are very good only about 10 degrees higher than room temp for my P3 500. My Celeron II 566 only runs 5 degrees higher than room temp at 850mhz. I got a air conditioner for my room also. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

2 things - Good heatsink/fan, and good thermal compound.

Ram, The V5 does have a fan on each of it's two chips. My old V3 2000 pci ran tremendously hot also, with "burn finger" syndrome, but it never acted up at all. I think I'll get a good quality heatsink for the CPU. I also think that maybe the enormous size of the V5 hurts airflow within the case, contributing to higher temps. Each of my two chips seems to run cooler than the one on my old V3 (going by touch...), but they are still rather hot to touch. Take it easy.

My Celery 500a @ 500 runs at 43 degrees under full load

and at 50 without my exaust fan

500 @ 563 is at 55 degrees no blue screens or crashes

but this is too high aint it?

Check the Intel website for temperature specs for your CPU. Your temps of 45-47C are well within the specs.

My 550E runs stable at 67C under full load and mid-day temperatues (in Hawaii). It's stable at 792MHz, core voltage is at spec - 1.65. I can boot and run most programs at 803MHz (1.65v) but MechWarrior3 crashes so I keep it at 792MHz. Even tho I'm stable at 792, I suspect that the 67C temp is holding me back from higher speeds. So I've ordered a Peltier (Alpha SubZero from PelTEC) to bring down the temp and hopefully allow high FSB speeds. We'll see.
