I'm using Win98 and have 96mb of RAM. However, even when windows first boots up, the swap file in the windows directory still shows 40mb. I shouldn't have that large a swap file considering all the memory I have, right? There must be some settings I can change to better allocate my memory.

Actually it wouldn't hurt to have a permanent 100 or 125 MB swap file, if you have plenty of hard drive space. Some highend games, like Sin I think it is, use 256 MB.
To change it, Control Panel, System, Performance, Virtual Memory.

As far as I know, the more memory you have the less swapfile you need. You can customize the swap file in the virtual memory at the system applet. A swap file that is too big will slow down all the applications. Good luck.

ok. I have been trying to figure out the best swap file/[vcache]sizes to set:
My sys: p200mmx, 80mgs RAM, 979mg hdd free.
Currently, swap set at: min/max - 120mgs
also, what would be the best [vcache] settings? One formula I saw was:
MaxFileCache: 25% of my ram, ergo: 80*25%=20; 20*1024=20480. isn't that alot? and if that would be correct, what would be the minfilecache=
don't i want to keep both values the same?
arrghh somebody teach me heh

Windows swap file is dynamic. It resizes itself for optimal performance. The default vitual memory settings in WIN98 may be the best choice.
Some of us think setting the Min and Max size to (keep the swap file from resizing,) an equal number is beneficial or even moving it to a different part of the (physical) disk and/or a different drive.
The setting can be change from: ControlPanel/System/Performance/VirtualMemory

I reply to this post in the Tech section. Don't know if you read it or not.

Thanks guys, but my question still remains - given the configuration I originally mentioned - why does my system initially boot up w/ a rather large swapfile size (40mb) when I have 96mb of ram on my system? I can understand if I've opened a bunch of apps but my swapfile is already 40mb before I even do one thing.

If you are using 40MB of swapfile then your computer would be crawling - is it?
Perhaps Windows is just setting aside that much for use if needed. Check using System Monitor to see how much swap file is actually in use - if any.

hi tommy67 ~
I have a similar thread concerning these issues in this forum.
Here's a link that, I believe, has some good info - I found it interesting, tho maybe a little outdated.

hmm, just reread your post, this doesn't really to seem to answer your question. And i don't have an answer, sorry.
