Glanced at Wiz's "I won! I won!" thread... I'm happy for Wiz, but... sigh... I never win anything! I was beginning to think that a lot of these web-contests are complete scams. I can't imagine they're very well regulated, if at all!

Who else has won contests and from where?

What would you like to win, Jeana?

Just a nice smile from you, Sysopt. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I can't complain... I've been very lucky so far in the big things in life, and probably all the prizes should go to the folks who need more of a pick-me-up than I do. Just sometimes, as stuff gets dropped on my toe, or I find that the envelope containing my hard-earned cash fell out of my pocket, or as all the lights turn red in front of me, I wish a couple of small good things that I didn't deserve or expect would come my way.
So I keep filling out those silly online forms, even though I know that someday a 20/20 special will be run on online contest frauds and the hideous ways that our personal information is being misused.

But if good luck were somehow equalized among people, I probably should get hit by a meteor or falling piano to bring me down to par.

I won some colouring pens for a drawing I sent to a kid's comic when I was about 10. Nothing since. Oh except £10 on last week's lottery. Nothing on the internet though. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Speaking of my type of luck, somebody just hit my car today while it was parked on the street, leaving a very large dent on the rear door (over 2 feet long, 4-5 inches deep)! No note or anything. Grrr.

Sometimes I wonder what's the point of getting up in the morning and going to work, when I end up with a MINUS balance for the day.

Anyway. hydraulic is still right: being surrounded by loving people is the best luck. He also reminds me of the old Henny Youngman joke:
"Well, I can't complain. I got a wife and two terrific kids. And two out of five isn't bad." http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

It's human nature to focus on the negative. What about winning the gift of life when you drive at 60mph around maniacs on the roads and come home safely at the end of the day? There are lots of little things that we take for granted that really are the reverse of the things you described (lights turning red in front of us, etc.), sometimes we just have to be aware of them.

But in terms of contests, I know what you mean. Just about the only thing I've ever "won" is a cakewalk where I won a carrot cake when I was like 10 years old. Maybe I've won a few things since then, but on the same scale.

Just today, I hit a major red light. Put in an allocation request through an online broker for WebMethods, today's big IPO, for quite a few shares, along with Lante, and Flag Telecom, two other IPO's - lots of shares on all three. Any allocation? Nope. I was able to get one IPO that way in August, but not these. I've been very fortunate, what with the acquisition and all, that I think maybe I've used up my good luck http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif. At least some of my traditional investments are doing well.

Scott

It lists a good amount of computer contest, plus it has every other contest also. I try to get in as many as possible. Make a dummy email account though. The spam is gonna be bad.

Only ONCE. And it so happened that that once was with RivaExtreme (I think) for a copy of Wing Commander Prophecy - the rules of which denied anyone that had any connection to RivaExtreme were not eligible. Well, I was the assistant webmaster of ComputerHeaven.net and we had a link exchange going on with them. So, I never got my free copy of Wing Commander (which I never would've enjoyed anyway, in all likelyhood).

Oh well, life goes on. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks Wiz!

LOL, Sysopt... did you actually have to dance a cakewalk (or strut it, or whatever) and be judged, or did you win by random draw?

Sorry about that, Joel... in my checkered past I also nearly won something... free tickets to the Brady Bunch movie. It was a call-in radio show trivia contest, and I answered their question correctly. Problem was, one of my roommates was listening on the other line, and got so excited when I won that he slammed the phone down! The DJ figured he'd lost the connection and hung up on me. So I never got the tix... granted I didn't fight very hard afterward to get them.

When i was 8, i won like 180 bucks worth at ralph polo laurens...that got me a pair of pants and hat!..that wasnt on the web tho

then 2 years ago i won a Diamond supraexpress modem on Heat.net's 1 year anniversery...funny thing is I got it in the mail and didnt even know i won...Hadda call em up to make sure they didnt misship something...and they told me that i was playing a certain game at a certain hour when they picked the winner (i played for about 5 minutes, got bored n left). Well spent 5 minutes tho.

Ever since then my contests luck bites. I just go for free stuff not instead of contests, cuz I know I dont win http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif (hey got my NIC and my Linux for dummies book!)
