I have always used netscape communicator, but after messing around with IE 5 at work, I decided to switch over as it seems to be so much faster. It seemed logical to switch over from messenger to outlook express for email as well. Only question is can I have OE running in the system tray? I liked messenger as it beeeped at me anytime I recieved email while I was using navigator. Now I have to have OE open or at least minimized on taskbar to get that same beep when I get email.

Your outlook express must be running when you are online (I usually set mine to be minimized when not in use while I'm online) and an icon for new mail will appear in the systray when you have new mail.

I believe Messenger must be set to autostart with Navigator to perform as you had it? I don't believe you can easily do the same with Outlook Express. The overwhelming improvement of Outlook Express, to me at least, is its ability to handle multiple email accounts rather than being limited to just one in Netscape.
As to the sound, make it anything you like. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

NO
Thanks for the replies. I would have thought that microsoft would have integrated it in to IE 5 so that you get the announcement when you get new messssages with only IE open. I guess I will just have to keep it minimized as I have been doing. One more quick question. I have office 2k pro with plain outlook. I have never installed it because I never needed it. Is it much better than outlook express?

Hi!
I love Outlook, one reason being that you can actually use MSWord for your e-mail editor. Makes real nice e-mails. BUT, in mine anyway (came with office97) you can only have one internet mail account. With outlook express, I have two e-mail accounts that I use regularly (checks both every time I open, or send/receive mail) - and as far as I know, you can have as many accounts set up on it as you want.
so, if you have just one e-mail account you check, then Outlook would be superior in my opinion. If you have more than one, then Outlook Express would be your best bet.
Good Luck In All,

After trying the regular Outlook, I realized what the "express" ment in OE. Although Outlook has so many different features and options, I have found that express has everything in it I need. Express loads so much quicker, and I can teach someone how to use it in no time at all. I also think that Outlook is a little silly looking.
Remember, this is all my opinion, although it's not for me, I do have some friends who love it.

outlook is is quite feature rich, but since i do not have that much going on in my life that i have to plan every minute, i just have outlook express for my email gathering. you can set it to check your mail every x minutes and minimize it..t may be somewhat inconvenient, but it is not too much and it works....
