I have a k6-2 475mhz but all of a sudden i get a registration error when windows starts if the internal cache is enabled. but if i disable it, it will run fine but at quarter of the speed. Is my only choice buying a new chip or could it be something else on my system.

thanks,

I've heard of caches dying from overclocking. Were you doing that? If so, what voltages were you using?

If it just happened out of the blue, maybe it's a problem with Windows. You might try to re-install it. If you decide to do that, I'd format the drive first so you have no remnants of the old setup.

what is your voltage. if it's 2.4, try upping the notch a bit to 2.5, if it's 2.2v, try upping it to 2.3v. What do you mean registration error. Does it show a blue screen?? making the voltage high fixes these problems most of the time, but heats up the CPU also. So, make sure you are not running at a high temperature right now without full load. Near 50C @ no full load is not good. Under 50C @ full load with the chip is good.

It didn't just all of a sudden happen at first i thought it was the video card and i replaced that then the motherboard and then the memory and now the only thing that is not new is the cpu. it runs really slow w/o the cache but i get told i have registration errors when it is on. my system has a tyan s1598 mobo, voodoo3 3000 video card(which didn't agree w/ my FIC PA-2013 mobo), memorex 6x dvd, sony cdr/rw,20gb matrox hd, my voltage for my cpu is 2.4 my system seems to run hot so i keep the case side open to vent it.

sounds to me you have a K6-2 450 upping
it to 475...
try declocking back to 450 and see how it goes...
without internal cache your computer runs
at a crawling speed of 47.5mhz yes
1/10 of your full speed.
or upping the vcore to 2.5 or 2.6
good luck man

I set my cpu to 450 and it is running great. Except for some OE exceptions while installing windows and i have to restart the comp to get it to finish installing windows. I also get these errors when i install the latest via drivers and it restarts the comp and just when the desktop show up i get all kinds of errors. When i try to run game like (nhl2000 & microsoft fever 2000) i just get a black screen or the game starts and after 5 seconds i'm back at the desktop. before i was getting errors when i tried to start the games but i reinstall via drivers and directx and my voodoo3 3000 pci drivers and the games myself. i would appreciate any idea's.
thanks

Try going into the bios and making sure the ram is set to cas3 and slow down the ram timings. Also go to www.simmtester.com (http://www.simmtester.com) and download doc memory to test your ram to eliminate this though it does sound possible it may be part of the problem http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.
