ive got a gateway with an intel celeron 400Mhz and a 66Mhz FBS, but gateway didnt give me any info on the motherboard...all i know is that its called "TOLSTOY". should i just give up and buy a cheap computer and modify it or is there hope for me and my baby?
i say just get a new motherboard, and put that chip in it... then use your old stuff.. but it won't hurt buying other stuff... ::cough:: voodoo 5 5500 or Geforce2 GTS.... sb live ::cough:: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Gateway has it's own names for motherboards for refrerence in production. They are meaningless for the most part, in the real world. Sandra 2000 can tell you more about your chipset, but I'd guess it to be an Intell 440LX. It may be possible to use Softfsb www.h-oda.com/ (http://www.h-oda.com/) to raise your fsb. It has worked on some. All that you can do is try it. Let me know if you have any success.

this may be a stupid question...but if i do succeed in overclocking...will i need a heat sink???
bruno, so i should just d/l the softfsb?? think it'll work?

If it is like my brothers Gateway computer, a 400mhz celery, than you definitely have to buy a new heat sink. The one on his doesn't even have a fan. So at a minimum put a fan on it. I think however, you would be better off buying a new fan heat sink combo. SoftFSB worked with his board, you will probably have to take an inventory of all the chips on your board and compare with the ones listed in SoftFSB. That is what he did and it seems to work.
BTW there are NO jumpers on his board, and I don't think there are any FSB in bios. SoftFSB is your only choice

ok...tell me if i got this straight...when i start up SoftFSB, in the list of motherboards, choose one that says gateway on it....is that right?
then go from there??
uhm.. to put it in simple terms, choose the name of your motherboard. I don't know, but assuming its a gateway, choose a gateway that applies for your computer. I'm just telling you, INTEL is not the name of the motherboard, that is most likely your chipset.

Try using those listed as Intel LX. If they lock up and crash it's no big deal. But you may have to delete Softfsb and download it again to try the next one listed as Intel LX. Mine only shows two, but there may be plugins. Like I said , "All you can do is try." Check Sandra 2000 to see which chipset you have.

sounds good...but how in the hell do i "take an inventory of all the chips on your board and compare with the ones listed in SoftFSB"
i downloaded softfsb, checked all the motherboards that were on the list, selected one that looked like mine (intel, then some numbers), and got it to show what the speed of my processor is and what my front side bus is (66Mhz)...so now what? do i adjust the fsb? or wait till i have a fan heat sink combo installed then kick it up some? is a fan heat sink combo easy to install?
also, i was going by the guide given on this site but it doesnt look like my mobo has any jumpers...so how would i actually go about kicking up the speed? just adjust the fsb? is that all that there is to it?
it is manditory to have a heatsink and fan on your CPU at all times. No, it is not too hard to put on. When you pick the motherboard, look for a gateway motherboard, not an Intel motherboard. Why? Because Intel is your chipset, not your motherboard manufacturer. Remember, heat is also a problem, never leave your CPU bare, and if everything goes right, SoftFSB should work fine for your motherboard.
