All intel CPU's are clock-locked. You must overclock them by raising the front-side bus or FSB. Your P3 500 runs on a FSB of 100, with a multiplier of 5. The multiplier will be 5 no matter what you change. By raising the FSB from 100 to something higher, you will have the CPU overclocked. We can help you further if you giv us the manufacturer and model of the motherboard.

remember to not have too much fun with your FSB, you don't want your components to fail on you, such as harddrive, CD-ROM, etc...

When overclocking, remember the tortoise and the hair--slow and steady does it. So making a move from 100 to 105 or 110 FSB is a better jump then, say, 120. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

and one other thing, HAVE GOOD COOLING. Jumping to higher voltages requires better cooling, you don't want to fry your CPU either, if you do, then before you fry it, give it to me, and i'll give it a good home. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gifMy point is, Higher voltages = Better Cooling, Better Cooling = more overclocking, move overclocking = happiness http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

112 x 5 is the best way to go
my friend done it and it is not very stable
he crashes all the time and think it windows
to blame.
He had a PII 400 overclocked to 450 by
upping to 112
The truth it less stable then at 100mhz but
some do it because their not satisfy with
the speed that they have.
If they dont lock it we have better success
at overclocking
Let say a celeron 466 right
wont even post at 100mhz because it too much
100 x 7.5 = 750
100 x 5.5 = 550 is more likely to succeed.
You can thank Intel for locking it in the first place, their paranoid arent they.
I heard from an athlon user that
has overclocked from 500 to 800mhz
using 8x multiplier instead of 5x.
