My motherboard was only rated for a K6-300. Does it damage the BOARD itself to run a substantially more powerful chip in it?

Also, does the K6-2 have better FPU performance than the original K6?

As for the mainboard, you might want to stay away from the higher clocked K6-2s - they draw way more power on the 2.2V rail than older mainboards were designed for. 400 or 450 MHz ones should be fine though. Going too high may very well fry the mainboard's CPU core voltage regulator circuit.

K6-2 FPU is identical to the K6's. K6-2 brings 3D-Now! command set which helps gaming performance quite a bit.
