Anyone with "White Paper" data indicating that the L2 for the Duron is 128 PLEASE email me or respond with a URL ASAP

so is anyone making a socket A mobo yet though???

no one is making a socket a mobo yet. but about the 128Kb L2 cache, i remember that in ZDnet they said it had a 128kb L2 cache, but then you guys said 64, so i went with 64, but now, i've heard it's 128kb. You know what, I think it is. Go search for it in ZDNet.

LOL
Thier selling the processor, with unknown L2, for boards that arent made yet?
Clock lock still sucks tho..
Sweet proc nonetheless.
Intel may be more cost effective when clocked in the end...talkin Celly IIs.
I shouldnt talk...havent seen it in work yet.

i heard it had the 64k data/instruction cache as well as 128k of on die cache...not sure where though

i heard they changed the L2 cache to 128kb.

Look, the L2 is 128k, I don't know about the L1 - I think 64k - I never said the L2 would be 64, I was always on the 128 side http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Also, they arn't for sale - they're for pre-order. They should be in by the end of the month, they could be delayed though.

Here is a pic of wcpuid showing only 64KB.But it is misreporting the L2 cache if I am correct. http://www.jc-news.com/parse.cgi?pc/AMD/Duron/Spitfire_Prerelease/Tests

On paper, all Ive heard is 128k L1 and 64k L2...I havent heard anything else til this thread right here.
Only time will tell.

One thing I know for sure, the current K7 series have 128K L1 cache (64K data and 64K instruction) and there was never any plan to change that as far as I know. One of the selling points of the K7 has been that whopping 128K L1. Because the L2 has now been integrated into an existing core I doubt that any changes were made to the L1.

Now the question that looms is the size of the L2 used on the Duron. If it is 64K then I am not interested in the silicon but if it is 128K then I would heartily recommend this chip to clients.

From a marketing perspective, I would consider it a stupid move by AMD to use a mere one-half size L2 cache against their low-end competitor, the Celeron. I can imagine the misinformation already, "Oh look, the AMD chip has only 1/2 the L2 cache." Of course, technically speaking, Duron performance should be superior at the same clock speed because of advanced core design and the massive 128K L1, so more than 64K L2 may not be entirely necessary in a budget chip. But I am hoping that AMD has more marketing sense that that.

If indeed the L2 cache is 64K, one possible explanation for this move could be that there just was not enough performance difference between the Duron and the T-bird, and AMD wanted to be sure that the budget chip took a performance hit compared to the flagship silicon (T-bird) - I guess I would understand that, but I still don't like it.

I think I made a mistake since I have never used wcpuid. It says I-cache 64KB and D-cache 64KB so that would be 128KB right?

We will find out soon enough. AMD's site still does not have much info exect saying it will have the Athlon core and the L2 will run at full speed.

Acording to this artical there is supposed to be 128KB L! and 64KB L2.
"Duron will likely receive a modest 64KB on-die Level 2 cache -- and that, analysts said, is an unorthodox move. However, Athlon has 128KB of Level 1 cache, which, when combined with the Level 2 cache, gives it a total of 192KB of integrated cache." http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2571962,00.html

We just built two new systems with SLOT A mobo's.
We opted biostar M7MKE with Athlon 750's with 133 sdram(non ecc).
Both these systems have been up and running for over month now. They run great. Remember to cool, cool, cool, front and rear fans in case with AMD cooling fan on chip.

for mobo specs here is the location http://www.biostar-usa.com/

Cmonster, according to ZDnet, from 2 months ago, it's 128KB L2 Cache. " The chip will offer 128KB of on-die cache and will use AMD's new Socket A packaging for attaching the chip to the motherboard." Futhermore "AMD will aim Duron, along with it's K6-2 chip, squarely at competitor Intel Corp.'s Celeron chip. Duronwill be based on AMD's 0.18-micron manufacturing process." -ZDNet
