I've just tried out my new Celeron 566 (with Golden Orb) on my Abit BX6 rev2 mobo and I can only get the exact setting of 566MHz with 66MHz bus to run. If I try to modify the multiplier, bus freq, or core voltage I get the following message during bootup:

CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck - CPU SOFT MENU

This message occurs right after the IDE Primary Master is detected. I have up to a 9X multiplier to mess with, but my voltage will only go up to 7.0V. Nevertheless, it doesn't work under any combo I try. I downloaded the lastest version of my BIOS. The only problem that I can think of is that heat is not being dissipated to the Golden Orb properly (I didn't have much thermo paste), or that there could be a problem with my Abit SlotKET III slot1 converter.

If anyone can shoot some advice my way I would really appreciate it, thanks.

There is an auto-check for the SPU setting in the same are you modify those. Disable that.

Disable CPU Speed Error Hold in the BIOS, then set the BIOS to User Settings and increase the core voltage and the FSB setting. DO NOT change the multiplier, it won't change.

Thanks guys, disabling the Speed Error Hold took care of that problem. However, I am still having problems. If I increase the FSB setting to anything but 66MHz, I either get caught in a registry check and then forced to reboot, or I make it into Windows but with a fixed pixels setting which is much to large. Am I having a video speed problem or is there something else that I am missing? Thanks.

hehehe a newbie OCer........you need to set your PCI and AGP dividers to 1/2 and 2/3 respectivly. I would wager that they are at 1/2 and 1/1 right now....they run at a speed relative to your FSB,and they need to be withion spec to function properly..........PCI is speced at 33Mhz and AGP is speced at 66Mhz.........if your PCI is set to 1/2 at 100fsb...................you are really taxing that HDD to the limit.........I bet winbloze would not even load............anyways just set them to 1/3 and 2/3 then report back here

You're right Oblivion, I am a newby OCer...a very frustrated newby. I took your advice and tried to shoot for the PCI at 33MHz and the AGP at 66MHz, but I am still having the same (crashing) problems as before. This is what I tried:

FSB = 100MHz
PCI = 1/3
AGP = 2/3
Multiplier = 5.5 through 8.5
Turbo = OFF and ON
100/66 Select = HIGH and LOW
Core Voltage = 7.0V (can't go any higher)

I added a fan on the heat sink of my video card, so along with the Golden Orb on my CPU, I don't think I am having a cooling problems. Anymore advice for a weary OCer? Thanks.

i'm new to OC'ing as well but isn't 7.0V a little high? i've heard that most voltages only need like 1.7-1.8V for a successful OC.

Err...typo. I mean 1.7V of course.

Try burning it in? Set it to 75 mhz bus, with like..1.7 v, and run a good program to burn it in, in a couple days, you'll be up there. Seti, and RC5 are good stability programs, There are some specifically designed to stress processors too though.

Prime 95 - Run Torture Test. This is another good program. It's probably on www.tweakfiles.com (http://www.tweakfiles.com)

CJ: One thing you are doing wrong is trying to change the multiplier. YOU CAN't, so set it to 8.5 and work on the FSB and Core Voltage settings.

I have the same Mobo, but do not have a setting for an 8.5 multiplier. I have the latest Bios update, and even though the clock is locked, by not being on 8.5 it causes Sandra to give me wrong readings for actual FSB and so forth. Is there something that I can do or not?
Thanks.
