Hi I want to get a faster CPU (more than 233)
but can't afford a board and chip at the same time, so can I run a K6-2@ 5.5x83 instead of 4.5x100 till I get new board?

Savant: What kind of Mother board do you have?? You say 233, but 4.5 at 100Mhz bus equals 450 and 5.5 at 83 is 456???? How do you figure you're only running at 233???????

i ran 83x6 to get 500MHz, since i couldn't run 100x5 with my old mobo to get 500MHz since it was only a 95MHz mobo. OH well, with my new slot a, i won't have to care. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

oh yah, remember that you can also make the multiplier x2 since it remaps to x6. all k6-2 chips have this! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Pickel: the 233 reffered to my current chip the intent being to replace it, and eventually the board with a new one, (the K6-2) I was intending to rplace the chip first since I thought it might make more performance differance.

what is it about this forum that it drops carachters? I take forever checking it and I'm sure stuff is still misspelled

it didn't seem to like being overclocked http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
would start up and almost finish loading windows98, but then reboot

i dont' know about your mobo, but try http://www.overclockers.com as they have data on that CPU maybe. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

it would depend on the motherbouard as well as peripherals. does your current motherboard support 2.2 or 2.4 voltage settings? the dividers for the pci bus wil be unfavorable for your devices and may cause you problems. but if you get a k6-2 400 and run it at 6x66 you will have no problem...

quick question, I have a k6-2. My lowest multiplier setting is 3x. Will the remapping occur, and at what x?

The 2x setting on the mobo is remapped in the cpu to 6x so a 2x66fsb gives a 396mhz result. Sorry it only works on 2x multiplier.

Silas,

There are only two remaps for AMD chips. 1.5X = 3.5 X and 2X = 6X. This means that one who owns a MB that only supports a 2X multiplier and a 66 MHz Front Side Bus can still put in a K6-2 400 @ 6 X 66.

Checkout this link, especially the heading "Installation # 1". Tells about the BF2 trick to get multipliers on a socket 7 mobo from 4X to 5.5X with an AMD CXT cored CPU. http://www.crosswinds.net/~flozo/t2p4site/main.html
