I just built a computer for a friend, and everything is great except for the modem. It is an Amquest 56K Softmodem. In modem/diagnostics/moreinfo, it shows that it is working properly. When I try to dial, the modem clicks like it is getting ready to dial, but then clicks again (hang-up) and reports no dial tone. The modem is on Com 3, there are 2 serial ports (Com 1 & 2) and the mouse is PS2. I double checked to make sure the phone line was good, and I also connected a phone line to the output jack on the modem and to a phone and there is a dial tone going through the modem. HELLLLLLP Thanks!
BTW I tried calling Amquest, but got a recording saying that all voice mailboxes were full.

Hey Jim; That happens to me when someone's on the line. Have you called the phone co. and had them check your line? May not be disconnecting at switching station telling your modem line is busy. Check your settings in Modem and Device Mgr. When I reinstalled my Bellsouth software for Yr2000 registration and I had to get tech support to fix my settings. Can you call you ISP and have them check your setup. I've had my share of modem problems myself!!!BTW, I see you're from
"Newpert News,Va." spent many a day over there when stationed at Oceana. Had a sweetee
on Misletoe Dr., if you where that is?? (Long time ago http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. Hope some of my suggetions help.

another thing that you may want to check is this:
does that line use any type of voice messaging system like CALL NOTES, or does it actually use an answering machine? those messaging systems will beep on the line for a few seconds before giving a dial tone to indicate if there are any messages waiting. i've run into this before many times. if this is the case you can add pause commas in the modem extra settings so that it will pause long enough for the dial tone to come on before it starts trying to detect the dialtone.

let us know what happens!

ah, the curse of the software modem...

had the same problem too. i was just fiddling with it and somehow got it to work again. i don't remember the exact sequence, but i think i disabled the com port in the system bios, rebooted and let win come up, restarted, and then reenabled the com port.

the problem might also be related to the modem sharing an irq with something else. i reserved the irq, rebooted, and enabled the irq when win came up.

between one of the two things i did, the modem reset back to its original settings, but worked. i'm just recommending to stay away from pci software modems in the future.

sorry i can't remember the exact thing i did, but i was getting desperate and running out of time.

Ah, modems. I too have had my share of problems. I'm running 2 modems on my machine (not multi-linked, but 2 dedicated lines)and it was sticky getting everything running properly. My system is about out of resources! I suppose while you're waiting for tech support, call your ISP and perhaps they can help, e.g., provide a different initialization string. I hope I didn't misunderstand your problem.

Like the others who posted above, I have always somehow managed to fix my modems by hit and miss reconfigurations.

Good luck.
