how well are the intel celeron 500 ppga chip at overclocking.. with a good cooling system

or is the AMD K6-3 400 better..

which one would be faster and better at overclocking???

Thanks

The K6-3's just don't OC well. And the cell 500 isn't exactly a great overclocker in the celeron family, either.
There's a good cpu data base over at www.overclockers.com/ (http://www.overclockers.com/)
If you're looking for a new K6 for your present board I'd suggest a K6-2 500.
Celeron? got to say Cel II.

Just my opinion,

Celeron 2 definately! These sweet little chips are hitting 800MHz+ Neither the K6's or the original celerys would get to 800MHz (OK one or two extreme cases for the celery, but the celery2 gets there easily).

EDIT: remember that the celery2 has a default core voltage of 1.5 (or 1.6??)V, so make sure your mobo (or slocket, it you go for a flip-chip & slot 1 combo) supports it.

I had a 500 ppga in my rig a few days ago, all I could get it to go was 562 Mhz according to startup screen. I got a 566 flip chip Cel-2 the other day and I"ve got it running at 705 Mhz stable at stock voltage. I like the new celerons, but I kept the 500 as a backup in case 'sumptin goes "poof" and I let the magic smoke out of my new processor during the course of"exploring the performance envelope" http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif Keep pushin the limit as long as your wallet will allow!

Well, I know somone with a 500 k6-2, and he only got it to 550 safely, might of gone higher, but probably had to burn it..... But I know people with celeron 500's and got em to 700 without much trouble, so I'd go for the celeron if I were you...

Are you sure about 700 with a celeron1. I thought the limit was about 600/620mhz for .25 die. I have heard some go higher with watercooling but I would not say 700 was easy,I would say it is very rare. I would reccomend a celeron2 566 as they seem to be overclocking very nicely http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Any way good luck with whatever you choose http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

The Celeron die most definately runs out about 600 that's why Intel had to switch to 0.18 micron. Get the 533 or 566 FCPGA Celeron II and bear in mind that on these the die doesnt run out till 1ghz. CF 1 gigahertz PIII!!!

hey all....
I just bought a Celeron 500 today... sold the pII400 to my father http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
i have it running perfectly stable at 563 (75x7.5)& at default voltage..On a Abit be6
(160mb mem ttl (128mb IBM 7.5ns,32mb pc100 malay 10ns..))

.. runs real well..... traded off the viper ii for a v3 3000agp... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

id go with what everyone else is sayin'...c2 sounds good... but my amt of cash at the moment kinda made me get the c500 instead of waiting for the c2 633..... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
later...
