I have a friend that has been pestering me to overclock his k6-3 400 2.4v for him. I only have on-hands experience overclocking the K6-2's, so I hope some of you can fill me in here.....

I have heard of the k6-3's being easy to burn it's L2 cache when overclocking, and I was wondering if it's caused by attempting too high of a FSB??.....if so, would it hurt the k6-3 to be overclocked to a high frequency, using a 95 - 105 FSB, and high multiplyers? I am aiming at 5x95fsb @ 475, or 5.5x95fsb @ 522. I will not use more than 2.6v when I try, so whatever 2.6v can muster up from that k6-3 400, he'll have to settle for, or go higher himself......I only cook my own cpu's :-)

Any k6-3 info would be a big help!

450 should be easy if motherboard will give you the shot 2.5 volts should do it. more takes a lot of luck right now my k6 3 400 is only at 400. but my old board might go higher beets me just try 450 is a nice safe sp

CPUCook,

Voltage is the most common villian when burning out a K6-3. Your chance little by upping the FSB initally (prolonged amounts of time may carry adverse effects, but you knew that). I am running my K6-3 400 AFR @ 458 (83 X 5.5) using 2.3v. I can see 475, but she has all sorts of errors during Windows when left on too long and 500 posts, but does not get to Windows.

Don't take the K6-3 above 2.7 and you will most likely be ok. I would say 95 X 4.5 = 428 should be attainable if not even 450. Do what you can to get the highest MHz, unlike the K6-2, FSB is not important to the K6-3 only final CPU speed. Have fun and let us know how it goes.

i disagree, fsb is more important than multi no matter what overclock. i know the k6-3 has integrated l2 cache, but fsb affects everything, not just the cache. dont take this towards the overclocking of a k6-3(as i have never done one), but keep in mind that the faster the fsb runs, the faster EVERYTHING runs, not just cache.

While certain components will see some improvement by increasing the the FSB I think this link will demonstrate the differences between the response to FSB of the K6-2 and K6-3.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will be doing this later today, and I'll post what happens this evening.

I just O/C my K6 III 450mhz to 500mhz. I found that at 2.4 volts and 5x100 I would get registry errors upon reboot. I have since changed to 2.6 volts & 5x100 and am running soundly at 500mhz. My board (Soltek 54u5 with 1mb cache) will fsb to 133mhz, problem is it won't boot with the K6 III 450 at anything over 5x100mhz. Hope this helps!

I have had my K6-3 400 (2.4 volt)running at 450 (4.5 X 100) for 2 weeks now. It needs 2.6 volts to work properly. I tried to drop it back to 2.5 after a 10 day burn in, but it just wouldn't remain stable. I would definitely recommend an fsb of 100 if you have PC100 ram, running it at anything less is a waste of capacity. But I wouldn't worry about taking it any higher though, as the K6-3 prefers multiplier over fsb adjustments due to its L2 cache.

I also have a K6-3 400 AHX 2.4v on a Tyan s1590 mobo. it NEEDS 2.6v to run at 450mhz but its very stable at that setting. using just a standard Aavid heatsink and fan with thermal paste. Runs anywhere from 39C to 50C...summertime is here so she runs hot as hell, so i'm getting a GW FEP32 in a few days. you'll be lucky as heck to get +75mhz out of a k6-3...the ondie cache prohibits it from going much higher. Radar you are correct, higher CPU speed is better than higher FSB speed for the k6-3. b/c it has 320KB total of ondie full speed cache, it won't hit the L3 mobo cache as much as the K6-2 would, mobo cache runs a heck of a lot slower. therefore, the k6-3's performance is more dependent on CPU speed than FSB speed, biztyke. plus the K6-2 only has 800MB of bandwidth versus the K6-3's 3.4Gb of bandwidth (due to the backside L2 cache)

I have tried to oc mine and could only get it to go to 428 stable. I tried everything at the link above and had no luck with mine going to 450, I could get it to boot but it was far from stable.
I have a globalWIn hs/fan and it did not help a bit. I have tried it on two mobos also.

Well, I ended up not overclocking my friens k6-3 400 AHX. I set it to 4.5x100, and it ran very fast, but got too hot in just 20-25 minutes of Q3A, and shut down by itself. It would run 4.5x95 stable, and not too hot, but it was not any performance boost....so it stays at 4.0x100, just to be safe.
