i tried installing the network adapters and protocols like you said, and it did not work and then windows would complain about some .vxd files not existing, so i went into regedit and removed the references.
however, when windows boots now, it complains about a msnp32.dll not being found. so i go to the dllarchive and get it and extract it to c:\windows\system....is this correct directory for this dll to be residing in...? it says that since the system cannot find it, microsoft networking will not work...i think i have given up on getting the network neighborhood back but i want to get rid of this warning!

Sounds like a bunch of files are missing - reinstall MS Networking.

Yes that file belongs in Windows/system

Yep I would start completely over with getting the network all installed INCLUDING removing the lan card OUT of the machine. Somewhere along the line you have either killed something in the registry or deleted some system files for all this have happened (to cause you to lose the NN icon to begin with) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif At this point I would really look hard at doing a CLEAN FRESH install...Might take some time but I have NEVER had the problems you have had.

Hmm, quite interesting that i have two vxd files missing this morning...
anyways, all im gonna do to correct them is go to add/remove, dial up networking, then remove, then reinstall.

Quite simple really.

Hey, reread post... this extraction thing looks tempting. I only have two files missing.
1) vnetsetup.vxd
2) dfs.vxd

how would i 'extract' and replace them?

The best way to do extracts is thru the SFC program (system file checker) this way you can create a backup of what your replacing prior to putting the new file in place.

wierd. those two files mentioned above weren't mentioned in file checker, but i still get message at startup. where would i restore vxd files to?

The DFS file goes in the windows/system folder. the other one I do not have (it is a virtual device driver so it might be specific to a piece of equipment that you have in your system that I dont. But I would venture a guess that it too would belong in the windows/system folder with the other .vxd's

i just did a reinstall!!!!!! everything was fine until i tried to install the drivers for my lan card (built-in by the way) and now this stupid warning pops up!! i do not want to reinstall again, and cannot afford to either at this time. can someone tell me exactly what i need to do to get this issue resolved?? i do not know how to start from the beginning. and when i did the clean reinstall on friday, nethood icon was not there even before i started installing drivers. please, i need exact instructions as to how to proceed from here.i do not know why the system cannot find the dll even though it is in the correct dir....and it is annoying...

What brand and model is the "on-board" lan card? You need to get updated drivers for it.

update..
on another attempt to install the drivers for the lan card and then rebooting, windows gave me an invalid vxd call and would not let me boot and told me to run the setup again...be back in a sec, i need to go scream my rage and say to myself 10 times that I HATE windows98....okay back again.
so i got out that trusty boot disk, formatted c: and then reinstalled windows. installed all the drivers and everything is as it should be, nethood icon and all. I HATE WINDOWS....someone one send me a copy of linux....I HATE STUPID OS'S!!!!!!!!!!!
.....okay got that out of my system for now.....*deep breath*...thanks for your help mtnsnow and everyone else who replied to this thread. i am dreading when i get a new motherboard and potentially have to do this dance again.....

Deep, BTW is this Win98 or Win98se? is this still on your AMD k6-2 setup? If it's win98SE with the AMD there is a Timing patch avaiable (simular to the Win95 problem with AMD's running faster than 350mhz)

it's win98se on my amd k6-2 box..when i got to the windowsupdate page, i do not see any patches pertaining to amd chips..do you have an idea where this patch is to be found on the site?
i do not know if it is that,i think that i just had a bad install for who knows what reason on friday and it installed and the drivers installed last night slicker than snot on a doorknob....everything seems to be fine now...but i still want a copy of linux. i have had too many problems with windows to want to be a consistent user anymore.....

mtnsnow...
thanks for the link!. i checked out the link and it said either an amd k6-2 350 or via usb controller...i have neither so that should not be a problem. need to install the drivers...AGAIN....but after my first reinstall, the zip was working fine. it just makes me wonder why there are things that cannot seemingly be fixed except by a clean install...wierdness.

Deep, I found the Win98se patch but it's actually for specific chipsets (USB). But it might be of interest and need for you as I cant remember which Mobo you are using.

Found this post but 5 years old. I have same problem with a friend's puter. At boot, tells me these files missing.
vnetsetup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
also msnp32.dll.
Can't see the original reply with the details on in the above.
Is re-installation the best option? I have the original, legal Win '98 SE CD ROM plus boot disk. Also, there are 2 drived and the files for Win 98 are stored in there in folder d:\win '98.
There is a network card in the machine but it's not going to be needed, should I take it out or leave it in?
She only uses if for WP and Excel plus a bit of graphics design, too old to start with a new machine and Win XP she says, if it blows she'll manage with pen and paper as she used to (her words)
Any help appreciated. Esp as I'm a bity rusty on '98

All you need to do is remove the Client for MS Networks in Network properties and then reinstall it.

Leave the network adapter in - there's no benefit to removing it.

Hi, I have exactly the same problems .. same missing files on startup since I went on to broadband. You obviously have the fix for it sorted. This is where I show my ignorance (nothing new there!) How do I "remove the Client for MS Networks in Network properties and then reinstall it." ? Running Win98. Advice greatly appreciated.

Open Network in Control Panel. Highlight "Client for Microsoft Networks" and Remove it. Now add it back in - or simply make Windows Logon your default (beneath the main window).

Robham, I never cease to wonder at the knowledge stored in the brain of our leader, Bipolar Bill. The Smithsonian will no doubt make a bid for his brain in the unfortunate event of his death, hopefully a hundred years from now.
Joking apart, you have joined the top spot for problem solving computer glitches and disasters.
I'm pretty bright when it comes to upgrading and even building from scratch but when those sticky problems arise, oh boy do I run to the Sysopt entry in my favorites.

Thank you Bipolar Bill, I shall go and do that immediately and hopefully normality will resume (just as soon as I find out what normality is!) Yep, you are right Docust, I can see already that joining this Great Forum of all Knoweldge is the first sensible thing I've done in years.
