I found a PPGA 300A for $39 and I was going to get it - cheaper than a C366 - and I was going to aim for 504mhz+. The thing is, I've seen a couple of posts in the past about people's 300As finally giving up. I don't wanna toast a chip - no matter how little a new one coasts. How likely is a 300A@ 2.2/2.4v and 504/527mhz gonna last? (I know that sounds like a newbie's question, but I don't want my investment to toast.
Thanks, l8r http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I might be an Ultimate (nothing to do with anything really, just thought I'd throw it in http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif) but I've never used a Celeron, except for fixing one in the computer store.
Anyone with experience with a 300A?? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Thanks!

Around the time everyone was getting the 300A and pushing it to 450, my friend got one. My believing the rumors that Celerons had no L2 cache, and not checking for myself, I opted for a P2 400 (be nice!). Anyway, he has stock cooling on his, no thermal grease, no water cooling, no special modifications other than a 100 Mhz FSB, and has been running @450 ever since. He's pretty rough on that 300A too, he was the first one on the block w/Half-life, Quake III, and UT. Quite the gamer. I suppose everyone's experiences will vary, but I'm sure wishin' I had done my research then, and maybe I'd be running 50 Mhz more for $150 less http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif. But that's cool, when I get my 533A, I WILL push it to 800! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I don't know if I'll help much, but I have a Slot 1 Celery 300a @ 428. It can go to 450 but I can't run some games, and its gets hot at that speed. I heard the PPGA is suppose to o/c better than the Slot 1. Good luck in o/cing.

Yeah, when the celeron's came around, I heard they were PII's with the cache removed (or disabled?) And were real duds.
So, every time a salesman tried to sell me one, I tell him something like I'd never own one. DOH! Little did I know that the 300a and up did in fact have 128k! DOH!
So, I ended up getting a p200mmx when I could've got a celeron system for like the same bread. Wish I'd have kept up on the celeron's, I'd have been at 500 mhz long ago!
Oh well, by the end of summer, "bring on the celeron II's, Baby!"

Celeron 300a here at 472.5mhz 2.05v Globalwin hs&f, lapped and heatsink compound...
Burning in made no improvement whatsoever, will post at higher speeds but needs less voltage and will not get past "Staring Windows 95..." screen...
Hope it helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

450 is safe (at 2.0/2.1V),but at higher than that you are REALLY pushing it.@ 504 you can expact it won't live very long (2yrs?).You will have to use a high voltage too! Some guys use 2.3V on it!

We decent cooling I'd say it'll hold out at 504. If I somehow get spare cash, I'll build a water/peltier cooler http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks guys http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I had a Celery 300A too when everyone else was getting them.
I overclocked it in 3 motherboards - Chaintech 6BTM, Abit BH6 and a Soyo 6BA+ and in all 3 the results were the same - 504 MHz a default voltage with retail heatsink! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Very stable. During the summer it got hotter - still not crashing so I got a better heatsink from computernerd for it and it lived happily every after till October when I sold it to cousins, clocked back to 450, but he probably has it back at 504 now.

504 on retail?? You should have stuck on an Alpha, increased the voltage and givin it 124mhz FSB! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

This sounds crazy to me 504 @ 2.0V and retail cooler. You must have a SuperIntel!
I tried a Celeron 300A that had a good chance to hit 504.I have studied the 300A for 2 weeks, while doing this research I found SysOpt!When I tried it with decent hardware and retail cooler it had already 45C,and I already had to use 2.1V!I didn't even try 504,because I was going to sell it.I wouldn't have if I didn't find a PII-300 SL2W8,which is actually a 450.

let me give you a long term review of a 300a.. i had mine for over a year at 4.5x100=450 @2.3v 100F it ran very well.
i played Q3 and others for hours on end..
but eventually it started to give out.
i think some transmigration was starting to set in. i set a 1yr life expectency on my very heavy oc cpus, the higher the oc ratio the shorter the life.
i bought a 366(100x5.5=550) ppga celeron back in feb for $75, my goal is to make it to xmas than get a p3600e which should be a @ $200
by then
