I downloaded a 4MB executable file and need to transfer from the standalone PC with the dial-up internet connection to another PC. It won't fit on a floppy (obviously), and we don't have any other mass storage drive on this stand-alone.
The question: is there a way to break this file apart so as to save it to multiple floppy disks and put it on the box it needs to be?
THANKS!

The latest WinZip might, but I know that arj does allow floppy disk spanning. Try. www.winfiles.com (http://www.winfiles.com) for the latest arj.
Banti
winzip 7 supports disk-spanning, and I think winrar and winace do too. try www.download.com (http://www.download.com) or similar for trial versions.

I use this all the time. http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000VWG
It's free-free. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

As long as you have MSBACKUP on both system you can even use your built in backup utility http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Here is where you can get Win-Zip. http://www.winzip.com/winzip.htm
As Banti said it will allow you to span disks if the compressed file is larger than a floppy. Works great http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
They got a trial version you can download and have running in a couple minutes. Win-Zip it's self fits on a floppy too.

I like WinRar. (http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000CWL) I can't stand Winzip. Its just too slow for me.

Okay, here's a stupid question, but why don't you post it on a web site to download. Upload the file to your site, and you can download it to any computer you want. Then, if you feel you don't need it taking space on you site, delete it from that page.
Badda boom, badda bing!

regarding what reddog said... there is a newer version of the same program (different name but same manufacturer)... it is called rzsplit 97 and it is a little bigger than splitit 95 (the one reddog said), but will still fit on disk if need be... also, you can select custom sizes of splitting it, whereas splitit does not allow this... you can get it at:
http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000GKT
hope this helps ya...

GrandSlammer- I assume that the other PC does not have dial-up.
But to thise who do I recommend www.freedrive.com (http://www.freedrive.com)
I got an account with them couple of years back for 20 megs on-line. They have now raised to 50megs on-line. I cannot remember how I ever did without it.

There are numerous file splitter programs on the 'shareware' market. You can try the ZD (Ziff Davis) web site. I have one called file splitter and it will split a program into any size and automatically ZIP and make a self exicuting bat file for you to unzip the files. Pretty slick. But the other ideas that people have suggested also are good.

As wangel said, there is lots of splitter progs for free. Odd thing, splitz works great on NT but on my win 95 no-go.. On ome of my win 98 it works, but on the other it don't,, go to www.zd.net (http://www.zd.net) or www.go.com (http://www.go.com) and in the search box type splitter. Then try some to see if they work, Warning, don't use "shareware" it sometimes has unpleasant suprises.. GLuck DrVette

Our network is not connected to the internet at all. Our president is so worried about viruses/security that he made us set up two standalone PC's with dial-up access. No network PC is allowed to have direct outside access. If I had dial-up access from my computer I wouldn't have asked this question.

Go to:
http://www.twocom.com/nonags/index.html
Nonags.com has tons of freeware file splitters that very small yet very good.

sounds like someone needs to make a presentation to your president about virus protection and firewalls...there are endless ways to make an intranet secure as heck....try and see if you can educate him....

I have a program that I can sent to you that cuts&Combine Files. What you can do with the program cut the file and put it on 2 floppys and then put it together again on the other PC.
Just let me know, and I will sent it off to you. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
