My fiance goes to law school, and there they use word 97, we have word 2000 on her laptop, but only have works 4.5a on the PC. The law school has a program to convert the documents, but now with all her files that have been converted from works to word, I get a message in word 2000 saying "macros are disabled".
My question is, what are macros, and how can I enable them so she can make changes to her papers at home?

If you perform a task repeatedly in Word, you can automate the task by using a macro. A macro is a series of Word commands and instructions that you group together as a single command to accomplish a task automatically. Instead of manually performing a series of time-consuming, repetitive actions in Word, you can create and run a single macro — in effect, a custom command — that accomplishes the task for you.
basically its a hot key for going more complex actions, like inserting a table that is a certain size

If you go into help in Word and type "macros"
it will give you a lot of info on the subject. Not sure how to re-enable them, but the message your getting may be pertaining only to the files you converted. BTW, Word 2000 can convert Works documents also, if you try to open one, it will promp you to put in your CD and it will install the converter. Also, you can use the "save as" command to save a document in a Works format.
(there are a bunch of formats you can choose, including Word '97).
Here is the link for the Microsoft Office site. http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/
Here is a download from that site with a bunch of sample macros.
Word 2000 Supplemental Macros (http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/downloadDetails/supmacros.htm?s=/downloadCatalog/dldWord.asp)
Hope this helps

Thanks Wiz and Dave! That info helps, but if anyone can tell me how to enable macros, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi noresull
After you've recorded your macro, you can run the macro by either a button you have assigned for it (on the toolbar), or go to Tools, Macros, ->Macros (or Alt + F8).

(Oops! That's for Word97... I don't know if it's the same procedure for Word2000...)
