I never thought I'd get here but I'm 43 -- 44 in June. I remember:

*15-25 cent hamburgers,
*the first color broadcast of Walt Disney (on an old Zenith set that was obviously designed for air traffic control!!!),
*LOOK and LIFE magazines,
*large passenger aircraft with propellors,
*"duck and cover",
*JFK's assasination (I was in my driveway, just after getting off the school bus),
*No "clicker". Watching TV meant getting erstwhile exercise.
*McHale's Navy, Flintstones, F Troop, Car 54 Where Are You?, Payton Place, Donna Reed, etc.
**REAL* muscle cars!!!,
*party lines and rotary phones,
*hula-hoops, per rocks, mood rings, "Musk" cologne, Nehru jackets, etc.

Sorry about the memory flood...it made an old guy feel better!!

And you young whipper-snappers ought to seize the opportunity that fate/time has handed you, life has never been so good for humankind even with all the problems we have -- and do as much as you can in as short a time as you can! Oh to be 16 again!!!

It's a long one:

Feeling Old Today?

Each year, the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of that year's incoming freshmen.

Here's this year's list:

1. The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1980.

2. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and did not know he had ever been shot.

3. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.

4. Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression.

5. There has been only one Pope. They can only really remember one president.

6. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.

7. They have never feared a nuclear war. "The Day After" is a pill to them, not a movie.

8. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up, and Tiananmen Square means nothing to them.

9. Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

10. They never had a Polio shot, and likely do not know what it is.

11. Bottle caps have not only always been screw off, but have always seen plastic. They have no idea what a pull-top can looks like.

12. Atari pre-dates them, as do vinyl albums.

13. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.

14. They have never owned a record player.

15. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.

16. Star Wars look very fake to them, and the special effects are pathetic.

17. There have always been red M&Ms, and blue ones are not new. What do you mean there used to be beige ones?

18. They may have heard of an 8-track, but chances are they probably never have actually seen or heard one.

19. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.

20. As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 32 cents

21. They have always had an answering machine.

22. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV.

23. They have always had cable.

24. There have always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is.

25. They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

26. They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony.

27. Roller-skating has always meant inline for them.

28. The Tonight Show has always been with Jay Leno.

29. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.

30. Popcorn has always been cooked in a microwave.

31. They have never seen Larry Bird play, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a football player.

32. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

33. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII, or even the Civil War.

34. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.

35. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

36. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

37. They never heard the terms: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "de plane, de plane!"

38. They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is.

39. The Titanic was found? I thought we always knew where it was.

40. Michael Jackson has always been white.

41. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups.

42. McDonald's never came in styrofoam containers.

43. There has always been MTV.

I'm 29.

ive just reached the same age as the number of states. as a kid we got our first TV in 1954 a 17 inch, huge in those days, to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 2. sweets(candy) was still on ration in that year, 2oz a week. anyone remember The Cisco Kid tv series, and Amos and Andy. there was no daytime TV and only one channel, BBC1 in the UK. I got my first Transistor Radio when I was 11, its size was about 4 x 3 x 2 inches and seemed a miracle at the time.
Got my first sports car, a Sunbeam alpine soft top in 1969. What a girl puller.

Yeah, those metal trays had a major design flaw, common in products of the era.
They WORKED and they LASTED.
How in the world did companies survive making things you only bought ONCE?

Luckily they've since discovered how foolish this was, and seemingly no products are allowed to both work AND last!

My sisters and i programmed the monopoly game from the back of the manual. also we had AMOK, a rip off of space invaders (i forget what it was called), a few text-adventure games, wargames (my first plugin cartridge game - made from the movie) and a couple others i dont' really remember...

Outpatient - I'd like to be the 14th to wish you a Happy Birthday... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

(mentioned before, but loved them all): Get Smart, Muppets, I dream of Jeannie, and Gilligans Island
[Dreamboat Annie - was that Patches Pal thing from The Polka-Dot Door?]
Buck Rogers(My absolute favorite show growing up)

The Greatest American Hero (<singing> Look at what's happened to me - e.... I can't believe it myself... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif )
The Whiz Kids

BTW, M8B&TE, I was living near Tacoma when St. Helens blew. It was pretty **** cool (hey, I was a kid). By the next day we had about 2 inches of ash. Almost like snow...but different. Instead of pretty and white it's ugly and gray. Instead of melting with rain it just turns to mud. But it got us out of school! Woohoo!

Hi Guys,

"Life begins at 40" is an old phrase, i think is TRUE.
After that you don't care about age anymore.

I guess only the ones that are younger count their ages.

Me, i care more about who people are and why they are doing what they are doing.

So SOCALGAL, you may take that secret to the grave, but PLEASE give us a picture.

I guess it's the least you could do as the most reflected person in this community.

To whom it may concern, i'm 42 and still going strong.

Stay Healthy!

OMG, Land of the Lost! (http://livingisland.com/shows/landlost/index.html) hehe. What were those wierd creatures called? They gave me nightmares. And HR Pufnstuf (http://livingisland.com/shows/pufnstuf/index.html) with that magical talking flute. What kind of hippie's drug induced nightmare was that show created from?

And anyone else watch Star Blazers (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Harbor/3904/geoyamato.html)? That was my first taste of Anime but I didn't know it.

But Speed Racer ruled! I still want a Mach 5 (http://w3.nai.net/~jp/n_heller/speed.htm). (especially those nose mounted circular saws. Would be great in traffic.)

And all you Speed Racer fans, be sure to go get your free e-mail here. (http://mail15.bigmailbox.com/users/speedracercom/)
I just got mine: outpatient@speedracer.com
Pretty cool, huh?

Yeah, the sleestak... man....
i never understood why they were scary though. I mean, if they started chasing you, all you had to do was walk away for about 10 seconds, then they'd be far enough behind you that you could stop, strike up a lucky, have a relaxing smoke, maybe cook some dinner and have a nice meal before they ever caught up enough to make you have to move again. And if you were smart enough to carry some of those neat rocks around, you could make explosives out of them to keep them at bay while you enjoyed dessert. Oh well, i still liked the show.
But one of my absoulte favorites i forgot to mention - (from a little later in my life) Robotech! I absolutely LOVE Robotech. I remember the first time i watched it at my dad's shop. (my sis and i had to go there in the summer cause my mom worked there too, but we had fun.) We were flipping through the channels when we saw what looked like a cool cartoon. After watching it for a little while, i decided i hated it because it was like a soap opera. I never missed an episode since then! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif What Rick Hunter ever saw in Minmei I'll never know... Lisa was much better for him - glad they ended up together! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I just had to go out and buy the whole series on tape... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif (not the later invid invasion or southern cross - didn't like those as much..)

ANYway boy did i digress! Dreamboat Annie - guess you were a bit before my time, huh. But i do reemmber the Green Hornet and watched a few episodes of Dark Shadows. I also loved Dr. Who! (the fifth guy who played him, i think - the one with the scarf - he was my fav.) Also i listened to a couple episodes of The Shadow (who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men...) Mostly cuz of my parents, i guess. They also introduced me to FibberMcGee and Molly.

Who here remembers the mini series "The Martian Chronicles"? (Ray Bradbury was it?) I think it was on HBO or something - i don't think it was on broadcast tv, but i know it predated the scifi channel by more than 10 years. I think it may have been on a predecessor to the scifi channel - kinda like HA-TV compared to Comedy Central.

For an opportunity to post, this is a fun topic. I was born in the best year: 1954. My dad was at Normandy on D-Day. Take 10 cents and chase ice cream truck down street! Milk was 2 cents at school. In GLASS BOTTLES! I was walking home from school in 3rd or 4th grade when some nut told me President Kennedy had been shot. And Martin Luther King. Hardware stores were awesome complete with creaky floors. Gas cost about 29 cents per gallon. Cars were huge heavy metal things that a owner could fix him/herself. So were bikes unless you could afford a English Racer. Awesome muscle cars. Beach Boys. Elvis. The British invasion. My family watched Neil Armstrong step on the lunar surface. It was in black & white, but our color TV was one of those that made faces look pinkisk green. TV repairmen would make house calls and it was a big exciting event. Watching TV when one of the Appollo missions exploded on the launch pad. MacDonalds hamburger, french fries and soda about 30 cents. $5.00 bought a lot of neat stuff. My first radio was a 6-transistor that I thought was cool hanging on my bike handlebars. French or Spanish mandatory. Hydrogen generators in lab - very explosive! Cigs about 35 cents a pack. Long hair. Woodstock. Bell bottoms. Flower child. Hippies and Yippies. Beatnicks even. Sam the Sham & the Pharohs. Nam was a drag. Daily body counts and news footage. Nixon and the Constitutional crisis barely averted by his resignation. Ford takes over. "WIN" (Whip Inflation Now). 8 track tapes! ("Cool!") Slide rulers. Calculators... whoa! The Oil Embargo. A nickel bag was huge. Flag rolling papers & headshops. Bongathons. George Carlin and "Toledo Windowbox." "Smoke on the water,, fire in the sky." Led Zepp! Garage bands. Slingerland drums, Les Paul Sunburst guitars, Fender Vanilla amps. (Think they were Fender.) Weed in dorm rooms at Boston University and school policy was to leave students alone. Aids wasn't a concern. Time slows down for no man . . . Studying for Bar exam in Massachusetts when Challenger exploded. First computer was a Tandy 10-Meg HD. My brother told me, "you'll never fill that baby up." Next machine flew -- 386MHz machine with 12MHz clock cost me $1500.00. And on and on. Being born in '54 is the greatest! Ain't life grand? May you live all the days of your life!

God You're old.... ;-)

I'm 19, and i can't really remember anything special... Lennon was shot about 10 days after i was born (27/11-80) - my first 'puter was a "Videopac" (Don't now if thats the right name)

But i do recall Challenger....

I think that the question for my generation is not what HAS happened, but what's to come: In the '90 alone there has been more things invented than in the entire 19' century - get ready for a rollercoaster ride!

"It's not how old you are, what matters is how old you feel"

I was watching the launch on TV when Challenger exploded. I remember Regan as president. Watch the opening shots of the Gulf War on TV. First computer was a TRS-80. Can remember when gas was 89 cents.

BTW, I was born in 1978, I'll be 22 in March!

I said before that I was 41, but if you go by THAT, well I guess my age varies from 15 to 150...
