I have my k6-2 400(2.2v) at 475@2.8v right now
the other day for kicks i aimed a house fan into the open case....and right now MBM says my chip is at 28C....so i thought what the hell, push it higher, tried 4x124 at 2.9v.
It posted and ran fine, temps were 31-33C, and evertying worked, but if i leave it just sitting it will freeze after about six hours of idling. what could be causing this???
the temps never get over 50C....so it can't be heat????
with temps like these is it safe to push the voltage up past 3v????

You are risking it at 2.9v don't go any higher. I overclocked my cousins 400@500 a couple of weeks ago and it needed 2.8v but it has a very large heatsink & fan. If the only problem is it locking at idle then leave a screensaver going and see if that helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I don't think that anyone should believe software temp readings. I was going by a couple using an avg. when it finally hit me that the power/aux temps from Sandra were the closest to my crash points. That was the only reading that was effected by voltage changes and progs like Rain. I'm looking for a real temp probe, any advice on where to find one that's accurate???

according to motherboard monitor it is at 29C right now
sandra says board at 17C, cpu at 38C, aux at 25C....btw i just got finished with a 2 hour counter strike session.
so unless those are off by at least 15C i am in the safe zone...and the heatsink is cool to the touch...
can voltage alone kill the chip when it is operating at safe temperatures?

What m/b do you use?
124FSB sounds high to me and if you ran pc100 you need to atleast take it to CAS3 (for 8ns). I run my k6-2450 AFX @ 4.5x124 with Pc133 (7ns) CAS2 with no probs @ 2.7V but I would not go higer than that (in FSB) eventhough the m/b has a 133Mhz setting due to the bad quality RAM TAG (only 8ns). So check yours for that. What I do not understand is why you don't set it to 5x100 rather than 4x124. the system will make it easier (as it is not overclocked) and the only problem if it doesn't do it will be the CPU itself. Not all chips are the same, some will do better. I have just tested 6 different 500Mhz K6-2's and only two could make 560(5x112) the rest could not even do 550 with less than 2.6V. Only one made 600! If you have a 112 setrting try4.5x112 and I think this should be the max (at no more than 2.7V)

i have an EPoX MVP3 G2
4.5x112 does the same as 4x124
runs fine, and then i leave for work or school, and i come back to find it is frozen...no blue screen...just frozen...and the last tempreading is less than 35C...so i am at a loss...and if run at 5x100 it will post, but crashes in windows startup...guess i have just hit the best the chip can do...

I am running first edition win98...
the 4x124 works great and is fast as hell...but i am just frustrated by the lock ups that occur when i am not there, temps are always in good range...so who knows...
guess i will have to try the seti thing and see what happens...

Do you use win98SE?
I have my G2 running at whatever I set it to (sensible) and I only get it to freeze like you say when I run SE. with nonSE it runs great @ 4.5x124.
THe best setting for you is 4x124! the higher bandwidth is no match even for 5.5x100!
How is seti running?
Download the NT command version and run it. Does it lock? reboot?
if it reboots it's heat related
in win98SE it froze but in nonSE it doesn't. So i use nonSE.
