Anyone get a windows protection error after installing winproxy??? LOL- I did! What do you think is the best proxy soft out there for in-you-home lan?

I use Linux's IP Masquerading in my home LAN, and it works beautifully. Iron Clad security, and all my systems have full access to all ports. No configuration necessary on client systems. Just specify the IP of the firewall as the gateway in your NIC setup.

I use Winproxy and Linux's IP Masqeurading on the same machine (dual boot), and I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that Linux works better for simple proxy tasks.

Winproxy is the best Win32 proxy in my experince however. I tried at least 10 before I tried Winproxy (including the dreaded WinGate <shudder> ), and Winproxy is the most stable, and has the best features.

We use it in our school, mainly for the filtering functions. It runs on a dedicated PPro 200 w/64MB of RAM, and serves over 80 systems in 5 locations in 2 different buildings. Works fairly fast even during peak load.

Now that the preamble is over, if you have a spare 486, put Linux on it and use it as a dedicated IP Masquerading firewall.
