some of you may remember my post about my tele co that sucks. seems like they are gonna offer adsl at a fairly reasonable price. i am gonna get it but have a couple of querstions.

is it possible to get incoming phone calls on dsl and be on the web at the same time?

how hard will it be to install the moden and the nic. i have done some hardware installs on my machine but would like some advice from on installing the nic and modem.

thanks for the help http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes, you can get phone calls while surfing. As for the other questions, I have ideas but no hard experience so I will leave that to someone who has DSL. We just got service ourselves.

Phone and ADSL will work at the same time. The install is usually required in the deal (b/c they make out like bandits).

My advice... use an extrnal ADSL. The connection will come into your house into the ADSL splitter and then into your NIC. This NIC is a standard old NIC that your probably already have. With the external ADSL splitter, it will be easier to add more comps the connection later (if you want). Another thing, you need to look into port software and/or firewall software with your 24/7 connection.

Goodluck you lucky [CENSORED](my telco will not tell me when my area will support ADSL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif),

Installing the NIC is the same as any other piece of hardware. Just pop it in & install the drivers when Windows detects it.

Then depending on your service, your modem either uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), or a Static IP.

With DHCP, you do nothing. Just reboot your system & the NIC gets it's IP for that session automatically from the DHCP server at the ISP. This is what Windows is set up for by default.

With a Static IP, you have to manually type in your IP address, subnet mask, DNS servers, and gateway.

My service uses Static IPs, which I prefer greatly. It's much easier to set up other OSes and servers using them.

I'm not sure if this could generally be relevant... but if you had problems with your telco, you may want to consider the prospects of using another one of their services. It may be a lot better, or it might be just a bit better...

Check out www.dslreports.com, (http://www.dslreports.com,) and find out how far you are from your telco, as well as possibly other providers in your area and what xDSL-types you can take advantage of.

Hey, just pay attention that the download speed is the same as the upload speed. Bell Atlantic (my tele) offers 684k down and the upstream is capped at 90k ! that really stinks and I will not give up my cable modem however bogged down it is for a 90k upload cap. I can get isdn around here 128k up and down for $30 a month....sorry, just gumpy about DSL and how I can't get a good deal on it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
