Sterling_Aug 03-28-2000, 06:16 PM It means that you are running your PCI cards and hard drive at 83 MHz FSB which is 41.5 MHz PCI bus speed. You are running a device designed to run at 33.3 MHz so far out of spec that you risk damaging your hard drive and any other PCI card in your system. You should be happy with a 75 MHz FSB setting and a system that works. skywalker[TSG] 03-28-2000, 07:01 PM really ? ? wow mrdisco 03-29-2000, 11:02 AM It should be noted, however, that BX and later chipsets adjust the bus multiplier for 100MHz and higher. This means that frequencies below 100MHz have a standard PCI multiplier of 1/2 and AGP mult of 1. 100 MHz and above gets PCI mult of 1/3 and AGP mult of 2/3 to compensate for the increase: FSB PCI AGP 66 33 66 75 37 75 83 42 83 100 33 66 112 37 75 133 44 89 This is why most motherboard manufacturers warn you about using "out of spec" bus speeds like 75, 83, and 112. Many times, systems run with more stability overclocked to a 100 MHz FSB than to 83 MHz because of the adjusted multiplier. That assumes, of course, that the CPU can reach that speed. The VIA-133 chipset takes this one step further and resets the clock ratio at 100MHz and 133 MHz: FSB PCI AGP 100 33 66 112 37 75 133 33 66 150 37 75 This is why 133 MHz FSB on a VIA motherboard is more stable than on a BX board. BX boards do not adjust the multiplier at 133 MHz FSB. SysOpt.com
