I have just been informed by the company that ther reason my "Softlock" product registration number changed is not because it timed out (as I suspected) but because I defragmented my drive?

Can you imagine that? If you defrag your drive you have to call Softlock for another password! This is too much!

You know, sometimes software companies are morons. Defragmenting a drive is a mundane administrative/housekeeping task and shouldn't affect any part of the "Softkey" operation. The operative word is SHOULDN'T. You've bought and paid for the software and own the password and agreed to the EULA when you opened the software, so why the hell should "Softkey" care where it is on your HDD? I know they're only trying to vigorously protect their interests, but this is too much.

My brother-in-law has an expensive (~$750) CAD package call Chief Architect. If you upgrade your system, like adding a new CDROM or adding a second HDD, the configuration initialization file doesn't match any more, and your old password is invalid. You have to call them for another password.

These idiots aught to use a "key" on the printer port or some other hardware method.

They'll never learn...

Like Tony said, these programmers should learn to use a less comprehensive method for system ID - a more specific component would cause far less hassle.

After spending $XXX on an expensive program, it's a bit worrying to think you have to keep going back to the company every time you make a minor modification to your system. Sleepless thoughts of big companies going bankrupt come to mind . . . then what? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

A simple defrag is ridiculous! What were these guys thinking of? Or were they thinking?
