This is a quote in an article on CNN about the PlayStation 2.
"According to MicroDesign
Resources, the processor can handle 6.2
gigaflops at 300MHz. A single gigaflop equals
one billion floating-point operations per
second. MDR says that makes the chip two times faster than a 733-MHz
Pentium III and 15 times faster than a 400-MHz Celeron at handling tasks
like full-motion video. For the statistics-minded, the processor can handle 75
million 3D transformations per second, and can render images at 2.4 billion
pixels per second. "
WOW!!!! Enough said!

Specialized Procs...
I read there is a teraflop machine that computes stars effects on the universe... but that is all that it will do...

That's one big mutha.
But as powerful as it may be, it'll be in the dust with my other *state-of-the-art* Atari 2600, NES, SNES, and 486 systems, if you know what I mean.
Technology sometimes advances too fast for us to have time to enjoy 'em.

There aint nothing wrong with my NES....and I dont want you to ever bad mouth it again, you hear? J/K...Its still more fun to play than the 64 for me, and especially the SNES.

Hmmm... lets see...PS2 is allegedly going to retail around 329 or possibly $299 U.S. dollars, and will not come with a game, second controller, or any accessories. Each DVD game is going to run $60-70 each(confirmed)that kids are gonna scratch/drop, so we're looking about $500 dollars+tax out the door. By then we'll have 128mb DDR cards running in 1.2ghz CPU's. LMAO! (Sorry, a bit touchy in the console/PC comparisons)

Well, I personally like comp platforms... i hate my 64! Anyone wanna buy it? You do? Too bad, I just shot it.
The only thing about comps is win98 sucks, hard to install stuff sometimes (I mean, hey, you cant just stick it in... you gotta take five minutes to configure!)

Remember...these console systems are like self-sufficient graphics cards (able to play games w/o the other components of a computer system). For years there have been professional rendering cards, which in terms of performance, have outdone the greatest PCs of their day...

*Wah* - pretend you're hearing a baby crying...
Chipbgt - you're not trying to start a flame war with me, are you? I can't take it no more. If you are, I'll go on my knees, wet my pants, and cry some more. I was just putting in my own 2 cents, in no way was I trying to put down your NES machine.
Gameplay, funfactor, and innovative games does not automatically come with new gaming platforms. Sometimes the best things in life are the simplest. Most of the games these days are same old same old...
I do honestly believe that the most creative games were made in the days of the Atari, NES, Amiga, SNES, and Sega Genesis.
Just look @ the tonnes of games that came out to support these platforms.

About a year ago, my friend told me about PowerVR 2nd Generation. It would be the card that would seriously match up to the TNT specs. (If you remember, TNT made wild specs, 250mpxls, but could barely manage half since it couldn't even sustain 100mhz without serious OC'ing & cooling). Anyway, the PowerVR2 was slated to get around 250 as well... but all of a sudden, the supply that was meant for PC's had all but vanished.
Who bought them? Why... Sega, of course. And their newly manifested system takes advantage of that wonderful card, known as DreamCast. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Personally, I don't care that much about graphics and visual appeal. Because my Q3 and UT both look great, and have quite possibly the BEST multiplayer capability ever (okay, there's other games but you guys probably never heard of it, like SubSpace). Also, you'd have to be a nut to get cable/dsl for your console machine just to get low ping, because 200+- ping w/ dialup in an FPS game just ain't cool. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I still respect console games/systems, but what makes games great is the multiplayer capability. After you beat some game (you vs the CPU), what's next? Almost any online multiplayer game will offer something different everytime you play it. It's rarely "the same" all the time, and you expect that, or else you wouldn't keep playing it.
Good specs

Well, after the first or second price cut...

Hey Plucky! What about the Intellivision!?!?!? You forgot one of the greatest systems of all time!!!
And what about that Pong machine? That thing beat out all of the pc's of the time. As far as pong went. I mean you could get like a big bar in the middle and play that way even!! These new systems are over rated. The last console game sytem I ever bought was the NES. And I am still playing it. Blades of steel Kings of the Beach. DUCK HUNT!!!!! Ehh plucky?

Erm, excuse my lack of tech knowledge, but me and my chums are wondering what a gigaflop is?? Presumably a teraflop is a bigger version??

Hello all, please define "console machine", fps is "frames per second" I think, but what is 200+ ping?
I'm thinking the dial up (inet over the phone vs. cable/dsl) loses some of the fps speed of the vid card? am I even close?
forgive my ignorance, I just got a tnt and am now hooked on gaming, prior to this doom is all I could do, Q3 is really cool.

I'll take on both Zo and Rookie's questions here:
Zo
a FLOP is a Floating Point Operation per second. It measures the speed of the floating point unit (or FPU). 3D games and serious calculations require a fast FPU to set up all the triangle geometry that's used in those games. So gigaflop = 1 billion floating point operations per second (about an Athlon 900 or dual P3 500). Teraflop = 1 trillion (supercomputer material).
Rookie
FPS in the context of the way it was used means First Person Shooter. It's completely unrelated to Frames Per Second. I know it's confusing, but that's the acronym. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
These days, bandwidth with gaming isn't as big a concern - ping is the concern. A ping is the amount of time it takes for your computer to send a "blip" to the gaming server and get a return "blip." A good ping on a dialup modem is 200-300ms (round trip) while a good ping on cable or DSL can be as low as 50ms or even 25ms (if they are lucky), though it's usually about 100ms. Even still, playing a heavy game of UT and some jerk is fragging everybody (never me being that jerk <g> ), take a look at his ping and it's 150ms faster than yours, you can understand a little - or at least make an excuse or two. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
That being said, I've never owned a console system, and may never. I thought about the Dreamcast a litttle, but not having a TV, I didn't see what the point was. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif The Playstation 2 is a great machine (assuming it will play DVDs - otherwise, why bother? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif) so I might consider that, too... if the price is right.

Erm, you CAN get the PowerVR2 in Ireland, around $230.

alpha, i know. at the time when it was released (about Q3 '98), the stock was taken by Sega. And now, the PowerVR2 isn't considered "latest and greatest" technology. So there's not a huge hoopla to get one. A TNT2U, GeForce, OC'd V3 will outperform it.
rookie, a console machine, at least in the way I was describing is generally any unit designed to play games only. Such as systems from Nintendo, Sega and Sony.
Well, on dialup it's generally a good idea not to ask for more FPS than your connection can handle because more frames can really start asking for more bandwidth and create sync problems between you in the server, ultimately spikes and lag. It takes a little bit of experimenting, and there's a few console (here, console as in when you press ~ in q3, half life, UT, etc) commands... but I can't remember what they are.

hmmm guys stop the console bashing
think back to 1988 when the NES was released
and compare the computer games back then
to the games on the NES
or go back to was it 1992 when the genesis and snes whas released
back in those days
the game consoles where 10times more powerfull then the computers
today this is not true
but lets take the psx2 for an example
for say 299$ and it will play DVD movies
and playstation 1 and 2 games and mp3 audio
compare this to a computer
and that comp will cost u atleast 799$ not all people have that money
or they do not want to give their children/ father a computer
remember these machines are made for one thing and one thing only
and that thing is to play games
wich they do extremly well
i remember my good old genesis
i uses to play phantasy star and NHL 95 on it,i can still remember the fun me and my buddies had in front of the television
yet to this date no lan party has been as much fun
i know that the console marked is dying but remember the good old days
when a computers were luxuary items
and there were these cheap consoles that provided so much fun indeed they still do
when reading this post
i pulled out my old SEGA genesis from the closit
and i havent has this much fun in years
so plz
just because u perhaps dont play much games or just dont like game consoles
think of all the fun and laughter they have provided for a cheap-*** price
just my 2cents

I love my PC... but I always get counsels too becuase I like to play with freinds and that way I can play with them for multiplayer gamews when we are in the same room. While I know you can do this with the PC... it snot practical. Also, someimes I really just want to play a game and dnot want to ahve to worry about driver problems and patcher and bugs... grrrr. While I now PSX games have bugs too... I have noticed PC companies od not care if they relaese CDs with bugs becuase they will just patch it later... and I hate that! If there are known bugs fix it before realesing the games! I know nothing is perfect, but PC gameing comoanies have become very lax on product testing in my opinion.
