I have overclocked my computer from a 400 to a 450 at 2.5v and it has been running stable for about 2 weeks, but I want to know if I can push it any more. I tried 500 and it would boot up but tells me some problem with a file and says I must restart. I have the Asus P5A motherboard. Any advice, comments, or suggestions???

Notfound,
That depends. I would assume you could do better, but we need to know a few things first. What voltage is your 400 suppose to work at? If it is a 2.4v chip, then you have about 0.3v more of voltage to play with to achieve 500 MHz. Also, what is your cooling situation? Do you have thermal grease between your CPU and heatsink to facilitate heat transfer? Also are you using 5.0 * 100MHz to attemp 500 or 4.5*112 or some othr combination that may be overclocking your bus? I may be so bold as to guess, you have a K6-2 2.4v running at 4.5*100 and you tried 5*100. If that is the case cooling or voltage will help you achieve higher. Let us know.

Thanks for the info. I will try changing the bus speed to 112 and see how that goes, and you were pretty much dead on with what I tried. I do have thermal grease and I got a good fan for it too, it keeps the temp around 37 C when I have a heavy load of things going. I don't remember exactly but I think that the chip is either a 2.2v or 2.4 to start out with. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you know how things go.

I have a K6-2 400 at 475 (95*5 @ 2.5v) and is stable. I have a small intake fan low and a small exhaust fan near the top of my machine. I have a larger-than-stock heatsink and have lapped the CPU and sink, using grease of course. I will do 5*100 when I get the initiative to add additional cooling. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

got it to run at 475 at 95 bus and 5.0 multiplier, but couldn't get it to startup with bumping up the voltage to 2.7, and it runs at about 35 degrees Celsius. Seems to be running stable. Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming if ya got any more.

Just a thought, but my K62 was very similar. It would run at 450, at 2.4V and 475 at 2.6V but much hotter. The benchmarks were a was on my system and I opted to run at 450. It was less wear and tear for the same speed. The MHz is higher but the fsb drop hits performance.
Just a thought

Don't go over 2.7v without a better cooling config. I had a 400 that would hit 500 but it took 2.8v which is hot...I use those big Athlon sinks and take the plastic of the top and put two fans on it. I also got one on my c400@600 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

It took ages to lap the sink http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Notfound,
Glad to hear you got up to 475! Wait a couple weeks and try her at 5*100 and see if burning it for a bit at 475 lets you go to 500. Keep us informed on your progess.

The chips vary a lot - the later ones(AFX/AFR) cores clocked really well and without too many volts, but the earlier ones weren't so special.
It can be done but not all chips are created equal.

I have had my 400 @ 5x100 for the last 3 weeks now stable and still running at stock 2.2v setting. I have a P5ab board and have a 4" fan where the speaker used to sit, a 486 fan on my CL 3d Blaster and a big sink and fan on the proc. Also a squirrel cage fan outside of case blowing at the 4" fan.
160mb pc100/2 pc133/1 set at cas2 DMA active
2x agp Turbo setting.
Got lucky I guess it's a good cxt core.
My temps run from 32c to 38c w/latest Asus PcProbe.
