How high can this puppy go with the stock cooling on a BF6? Is grease necessary for these?

I dunno about the BF6.
I have an Asus P3BF and the highest I can get my 433 cel is 541. I can't seem to boot up at any other bus speed higher than 83 mhz. I have only the stock fan/heatsink. At 541 it runs fine. The only problem I ran into was that at the higher FSB my system keeps accessing my CDRW drive. I dunno why. I'm using an old Conner 540 meg hard drive so I was thinkin that was the culprit.

I would say that no celeron will generally get past 600(600 if you are really lucky)
and any higher is a very rare exception.

You are much better off with a 366 or a 400,unless of course you already have a 433.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use thermal grease between your CPU and your heatsink. Even if you are NOT overclocking.

I killed a K6-300 'cos someone told me "nah, you don't need that stuff, mate". Well you probably don't on a 486-25. How much does the stuff cost? B.All!!

If both the heatsink and the CPU have been polished to a mirror finish (which they haven't when you get them out of the box), there will be around 10% direct metal-to-metal contact on a microscopic scale. A thin layer of thermally conductive grease finely smeared out over the surfaces (as fine as possible is best) will help to fill in those microscopic air gaps and give you noticeably better cooling.

EDIT:
Just checking: aleader - you're an engineer, mate: these CPU's generate 25-40 Watts of heat (depending on the flavour) and that's before you start increasing the core voltage. It's a lot of heat for not a lot of area!!!

How did you know I'm an Engineer? Did I mention it earlier? Interesting... I actually have a Cel 433 kickin around (I'm building a computer for my mom, and the place I got it from doesn't carry the 366 or 400 anymore) and I tried it in mine last night. Got it to 540 (83 x 6.5) no problem without changing the voltage from 2.0. It did put the temp over 50 C though when playing UT (I got the warning beeps), but it didn't crash. Gonna try 84 and up tonight.

I think this one comes with a standard Thermal Pad. Is it worthwhile scraping it off and putting on paste? Those pads can be a ***** to get off, and I end up scratching the hell out of the surface.

EDIT: Krusty, just figured it out, it's in my profile! Doh!
