Ok, so the other day, I am shutting down my computer. I had had some problems getting programs to run smoothly within about the hour before. I had been transfering some files into a new folder, and I tried to rename the folder, and all it would say is "New Folder" no matter how many times I changed it back. So after a while, I decide to shut down. I go to Start> Shut down> Shut down. It starts to shut down, then nothing happens. It gives me an error "Windows is still working with a file. Either wait until it is finished, or close it" even though i was not running any programs or anything. I kept trying to shut down, then one time all the icons disappear, so it is just my background. Finally I just did a hard- boot. If anyone knows, what does that mean? and also, if you know, is there something wrong with my computer? thanks.
I've had a simular problems, usually my fault, messing around, hit "ctrl-alt-del" this brings up a chance for you to select "end task" or "shut down".
Mostly this works. If not hit the reset button and let it reboot. It will give you a warning that you shut down improperly, but not to worry, just let it run scandisk (check for errors).
Once in a while it wants to start in the safe mode, I just let it and once it has started in safe mode and Windows has completely loaded, I restart and it comes up just fine. Icons are rearranged so I have to put them back.
I pressume you got it back running? And now it seems ok? Usually nothing real bad has happened.
Hope this helps.

On the odd occasion you can't rename "New Folder", I've found it's easiest to delete the folder and start over. Also, the folder name sometimes is, in fact, changed, but the edit won't show up until you "refresh" the window.
