I am running a K6-2 400 on an old socket 5 motherboard (It's an Evergreen upgrade).

I'm totally new to Overclocking. Where should I begin? Or is it not worth the effort since my Motherboard is so old and only runs at 66mhz bus anyway?

Simply, I need Overclocking for Dummies.

Try changing the multiplier to 2x and you should get it running at 396mhz. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

If you can't increase your FSB, then the only other option is to increase your CPU multiplier. AMD didn't put locks on the multiplier the way Intel did. Do this in small increments, and if your system runs well, increase it some more. If your system doesn't POST (Power On Self Test), increase the voltage to your CPU... BE CAREFUL!!! This will cause your CPU to get HOT. If you want that much more speed, you're gonna have to get a better cooling solution. If you're happy with a small speed jump, then leave it.

Oh, and BTW. FSB X Multiplier = System Speed. Just in case you didn't know.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I need to adjust the multiplier. How do I do that? When I say I'm new to this, I mean really new. And dumb!!!

I looked at my bios, which is MR BIOS, I couldn't find anything in there that would let me adjust CPU. What am I missing?

aha MR BIOS!

check in the last page of your bios will have a diagram to show what jumpers to move to take your multiplier to 2x.
I think your motherboard can only do 1.5x and 2x (socket 5). The Evergreen is a 400 upgrade you said huh? that means it runs already @ 2x66 and bewcause 2x is remapped as 6x this is then 393 in other words 400. I'm affraid there is nothing much you can do.

Get yourself a program to show you the CPU speed (sorry no link).

BTW, is this an Intel Zappa Advance motherboard? in other words the chipset says Intel 66FX ??

Unfortunately you won't be able to get more the 400Mhz from the Spectra400, the bottom only supports a 6x multiplier, and you max bus speed is 66Mhz. If you have a newer motherboard yoiu may be able to juice the FSB abit anf get some more out of it...
