Well, personally, I am VERY pleased with my Epson GT-7000 USB...

It all depends on what you want to spend...

I just got a new 36 bit scanner from Egghead.com .It's a Microtek Scanmaker X6EL.Scans legal size documents and comes with a device called a Lightlid that scans 35mm slides and negatives.Software includes Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE. You will need a empty PCI slot for the SCSI card that's included.Price was $129 with free shipping.

most scanners are preaty close to the same now as far as performance I would not get a visioner scanner they use a lot of propriatry software and I just dont like that. what ever scanner you pick get a USB one if you have USB ports
I personaly have a ACER acerscan 310U that I've been using for about a year now with out any problem's

i have an agfa snapscan 1236s that i like very much, its my third one and by far the best. this isn't a usb scanner tough, and if your comfortable with intalling a new scsi card (which was the easiest install i've ever done), i would go for the scsi

I want a scanner mainly to use on pictures that I can e-mail. Speed, quality of picture are the main factors in my decision.

The best speed is achieved via SCSI and bell1 posted a nice deal.
Picture quality is determined between technology and who is looking at it.

Why, it can pick up the Rescue Squad, the Far Departmunt, PoLeese, and sometimes them thar Next'ell calls!

What kind of pictures? If you are scanning prints, then the Epson flatbed scanner is tops. If you are even contemplating scanning film or slides then you need a dedicated 35mm film scanner that scans at 5000 dpi or better to realize prints up to 8 X 10 inches. If you are scanning PRINTS only for the web, almost any FLATBED scanner is more than adequate today.
