Probably a daft question but what MHz do ya reckon 66MHz memory could be run at without frying? My problem is a mix of K6-2 450 and a Asus P5A MoBo, My mem is 66 cos i cant afford any 100 yet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif so the board is set at 66 and i can only get a speed of 368 using a multiplier of 5.5 and 2.2V. Any help appreciated http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

YOu can try and take the FSB to 100 and see if it works, there is nothing to lose there. If it does, you just set it @ 4.5x100 to begin with and you're ok (or overclock @ 5x100 or even 5.5x100).

If this does not work, stay at 66FSB but if you put your multiplier to 2x the CPU will take it as 6x so you will run it @ 6x66=396

But you can surely take the FSB to at least 75 if not 83 and using 2x (actually 6x) will give you 6x75=450
You can try 83 as well check your AGP is running at 1x or 2/3x the FSB speed. Withg 1x you will be stressing your VGA card a bit. Same for HD's as they will be on a 83 X 1/2= 41.5 instead of 33. So go for 75 first and then check for 83. All these do not apply for 100FSb as the dividers change to have PCI @ 33 and AGP @ 66.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Usually I'm the first guy to throw caution to the wind, but I feel I should at least warn you.

Recently had a friend of mine buy a stick of RAM and he didn't realize it was 66mhz SDRAM. He put it in his machine and ran his usual 100mhz bus. Trying to get the machine to boot, in well less than a minute the RAM was fried. And I mean literally fried. It had a couple melted solder points, and we even saw a tiny puff of smoke. (BTW that's gotta been one of the most terrifing things to see when working on your computer.)

Now this is highly unusual. I've always overclocked the hell out of all my equipment and I've never had anything go up in smoke. I think it's very possible this RAM was defective from the getgo. Maybe it had a bad solder point that shorted a circut. I dunno, but just thought I'd warn (scare) ya. Increse the bus speed incrementally if possible.

Cheerz for the advice. Ive set the FSB to 75 and used a 2X. Its sweet at 450 an running a temperature of 36 - 41 C. Think that'll do me for now, at least till i get some more fans inside. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
