One of my friends had one and liked it, but it was soooooo slow. I hated it... I much prefer the internal and the parallel is ok too (but not as good as the internal http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ). Anyway, i don't reccomend getting one, if that is what you are thinking...

Yeah...I reccomend the internal also....The only good thing about the usb is you can take it to other computers fairly easily...but if you are looking for backup stuff or for more regular use, get the internal, its a lot faster.

got one......i love it for driver downloads......if you want internal go with cdr.....prices are not to far apart and the cds are cheaper........

got one too and it works just fine. fast too. takes a little over a min to transfer a complete zip disk to the hard drive, which is just fine for me. if you are looking to back up your system though, i would get a cd-r because it is a more economical solution in the long run...

plus CD-R’s won't be effected by that magnetic pole change in the sun that is supposed to interfere with magnetic storage devices, although I bet that will turn out to be a non-event just like y2k, I’ve had my internal zip drive for 2 years I think, but I don’t think I buy a burner until they are just a bit faster, I have a couple friends with 8x4x32 and they can burn a full disk in under 9 minutes, how soon till the recording speed is up to 16x? What is the fasted reading speed for a cd-rom (not a burner) available on the market today? last time I checked it was about 50x or so (but that was months ago).

I have a USB Zip drive. When you ask that it is Powered by the USB, do you mean that there is a version that runs off the computer PS? i have a USB zip that plugs intot he wall for power. It is great. It is the same speed if not faster than internal drives I use. It is very convenient and quick. I just wish mine hadn't died... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Yes. For example, I have a USB BocaResearch Tidalwave modem. It has but one cable: USB. Presumably the modem is powered by the power supply through the USB port. I'd immagine a draw by a Zip drive would be more than a modem, if that's of consequence.
Any brand names you all could turn me onto?

Thx. I'm checking for a friend. I've my hands full [wirelessly] networking a desktop and a laptop.

I feel the USB Zip is one of the best investments I've made for my computer. The thing i like best is being able to download and virus scan before putting on the Hdd as well as having a backup for smaller applications.
