I have a brand new Asus P3BF Motherboard and a PIII 500Mhz cpu. Also I am a newbie overclocker. I would like to tell you what I did and see what you think? First I have no additional cooling, just what came with the computer.

My temp probe reads 48 to 50 Deg C under normal conditions(unclocked, case closed in).
I then went in and over clocked to 575MHZ (115x5) and watched the temp probe, it climbed to 50degC. But at this point the case had the side off it. I left it like this for about 3 -4 mins and the temp never went above 50. I then went to 120x5 and she booted up good but I got a GPF right away and got out of that.
I am now back to stock settings and the case is closed up again. The temp has reached 51deg C this way.

I was just told that the temp probe on this board is unreliable. Did I do some damage? and please could I have some general comments and suggestions. Thanx!

Teeb, You always take a chance when you overclock, and if your temp is at 50 now w\out o/clocking you should get additional cooling before you do run into serious problems.

I too have an Asus P3BF and my CPU temps read like yours at 50-52C with no overclocking. From what I have read from others at this forum this is a common problem with this board. I can open my case and touch the CPU or heatsink and it is not hot at all. Probably not much warmer than room temperature.

Me too! I felt it and it was not even warm to the touch! I guess the temp probe is not reliable. I only want to o/c to 600Mhz any way, do I still need extra cooling?? It didn't appear to heat up at all at 575Mhz?

My thanks to all who have helped me!!!

You probably didn't do any damage when you went above 575 it just wasn't stable. Either your AGP bus or your memory couldn't handle the 120FSB. Buddmann is right. Get better cooling. Then I would try it again @575. I can only goto 525 and have my system be stable. Boots to Windoz @550 but locks (GPF's) in 3D games. Good luck.
