C333 overclocks / boots into safe mode. Having no success at all overclocking a Slot-1 Celeron 333 in an Abit BF-6 motherboard with 64 MB of Corsair's PC-133 RAM, I proceeded to yank all of the peripherals and hardware out. At this point there's nothing left other than a Diamond Monster MX-300 sound card, an STB Velocity 4400 graphics card and 10G Maxtor hard drive.
I can overclock that puppy all the way up to 450 Mhz and boot into Windows 98 Safe Mode, but I can't get into regular Windows, even with the processor as low as 375 Mhz. Does this indicate that Windows is getting hung while trying to load device drivers relating to the remaining hardware? Is Windows attempting to load some sort of software on Startup that is failing? Or is this a simple case of insufficient cooling on the processor? Does anyone want to play hackey-sack with my processor?

More than likely you need to improve your cooling. Maybe you need to bump your voltage a touch. When having windows load ALL the drivers and such takes longer and thus it generates more heat. and just to let you know before someone makes a blanket statement like "Slot 1 celerons stink when it comes to overclock'n" let me be one of the first to put that myth to bed. (http://www.aros.net/~mntsnow/celeron.html) btw these results are using the setup from my p3-450 page and 2.3volts with a Glacier4500 with artic cap heatsink setup instead of the alpha that is used on the p3.

If you have Costa Rica processor then it is quit abad one. I have tested a lot of them and Malay's did the best performance when overclocking. They could hit 515 easily while Costa Rica's didn't want to run even at 5*83=416Mhz. Increasin voltage helps in most cases but you must have decent coling system or let case cover opened...
BTW... PPGA's are better o'cs than slot1 ones.

I'm not sure whether the chip was made in Malaysia, or Costa Rica. I do know that it's not a 333a chip, and it does have the L2 cache. Adjusting the voltage up to 2.3 volts has yielded nothing. I'm not sure that the PPGA format is any better. I stuck a PPGA Celeron 400 with a Slot-1 adapter in the board, and I couldn't even get it to go 450 Mhz. Any recommendations for a cooling apparatus? Specifically, something that would also work with a future PIII 550e FC-PGA in a Slot-1 adapter?

when you are in the CPU softbios are you need to disable "speed error hold" because if you dont when you set the cpu to anything other than what it is it wont boot!

I have a Costa Rica 300A that will do 450 easily. I dont want to o/c it anymore, I am fine with this speed. I hd to "burn" the chip in for 3 or 4 days at 300 before moving to 450, and then dealt with blue screens for awhile. Bumped voltage to 2.05 and worked for a week, then had to bump to 2.1 v. Last 8 months it has been running well at that setting with no problems. Sometimes those celerons need a bit of coaxing I guess. Some guys I know with the SAME setup got it to 450 quicker than I did, some never got there. Seems the individual chips can make a difference, regardless of where they came from. Oh and use the best cooling setup you can, I have a dual fan/heatsink combo, and I understand their are retail 3-fan setups for most chips at 3dfxcool.com .
