Well, I finally did it. OC'd my P3-500 Genuine Intelly up to 600. FSB @120, sel speed high, speed error hold-DISABLED and a core voltage of 2.0 steady.
CPU temp @36 Deg. C. with standard CPU fan and 2 case fans and a loose side panel.
Trouble is, I got SCARRRRRED!! Everything seemed to run OK and no "bad smells" were coming out of the case.
I decided to reboot. Upon rebooting, the blank screen got me nervous. Did a couple of hard boots and got back to "normal" at 600mhz and ran a little longer.
Next reboot I reset down to 500. I am running the Viper A770 video card with the detonater Riva TNT 128 drivers...at 66 mhz.
My QUESTION: Should I fiddle with the AGP/PCI bus speeds a little? How does that "1/1 2/3" equation work out??
I wanna try again!!!

The following assumes you use an AGP 2x mobo.
DO NOT set your AGP:FSB ratio to 1:1. That would mean that your AGP frequency would be 120mhz x 2, or 240MHz (!) when it should only be 133mhz. This would probably set your vid card on fire http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Set it at 2:3, which would have your vid card running at (120Mhz x (2/3)) x 2, or 160 MHz, which is fairly close to the norm.

Hey Dominus,
How's that Athlon treatin' ya? If my memory serves me right it's a 700, right? BTW good call on the AGP multiplier, that's definately one ya don't want to mess with.
Have a good one,

Well I say leave it at 600. You should have no problem with the AGP set to 2/3. I happen to have a P3 500@620 and have had it running like this on a Abit BE6 for 2 months with no problems. Just make sure you have the proper cooling and it should be fine. After burning it in @600 for a while try going for 620 or higher. Prob have to set the cache latency to 1 though. ANyway happy OC'ing
PS, If your to nervous, THEN DONT LISTEN TO ME, it is your money so do be careful. Just wanted to let you know it "can" be done if you want to.

Listen to Dominus re 2/3 AGP! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I thought the cache latency would have to be higher to make it stable at higher speeds ie 5 or 6 rather than 1 but if I,m wrong correct me.

okay brydon, let me correct you http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
the lower the cas latency is, the less the wait is between memory and the outside world. if the latency was higher, the wait would be longer. when your bus is faster than the memory, then you drop the latency so that the memory does not bottleneck the system because of its relative slowness.

I understood that a lower number meant less wait state but in my experience when overclocking to reduce errors and lockups I always increased the wait states of my ram by slowing down the ram in the bios but maybe this is different for a cpu?.
Also what is the ideal l2 latency for my celery400@600. I currently have it set at 5. Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have the cache latency on my p2 350 @ 466 set to 3. The default was 5. Any lower than 3, and it had many many errors... Also Brydon your right, when you overclock the cpu, your overclocking the internal cache as well, therefore you'll want to increase the latency if you have instability problems to compensate for the higher speeds...

Thanks for the info mnx. I threw caution to the wind and set it to 1 and so far no lockups but I have only been browsing nd running RC5, I haven't tried any 3d gaming yet and I reckon that will be the real test.I cant say I,ve noticed much increase in performance but I,ll do a few benchmarks and find out.

Thanks for the info. You guys are awesome. The thrill of OC success is somewhat like seeing Aces at the black jack table. You split double down, and to your wonderous eyes should appear a couple o' Black Jacks!
BTW--what's the deal with the "junior/senior member stuff...did I miss a payment somewhere??
I'm gonna get some GOOD coffee for Saturday morning and get at it--OC heaven here I come. What the hey if I fry the sucker...I can tell my other half the darn CPU just up and died, "They do that sometimes you know honey..." how sincere did I sound??

gmarsh1, if you haven't seen this thread yet, check out AuraEdge's post about L2 latency.

Hello, G'Morning, how's the coffee today!
With enough caffiene to choke a camel, we are up and running this P3-500 at a smooooth 550. Set L2 latency to 7 and the AGP bus is humming along at 73*2=146 so no video probs today.
CPU at 37 Deg.C so the next step is 115mhz and then to 120mhz. I think the L2 is the key for this puppy.
Happy Day, Geo.

How do you mess with the leginacy. i herd it makes no difference if you don't have ultra dma 66. is that true i have 33
