They were having this discussion on another ng. I was thinking you guys/gals could tear into this one pretty good. My thoughts?
- He's tired of fighting the Justice Dept for trying to make a good Operating System. And he's sticking someone else in the hot seat.

or maybe he's going to concentrate on making a decent OS. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I agree, he needs a corporate fall guy while he goes back to geekdom for a while.

BBA nailed it, although BG isn't concerned about geekdom.
He knows that M$ is practically gone, and he smells the scent of death on it, so he's separating himself from it so he can make -$$$$$- elsewhere. Thats all BG is concerned with.
He's the bloody richest man in the world. His fortune exceeds the GNP of the UK. Yet he still shows up at the office every morning bright and early.
No private hawaiin island, no personal yatcht (sp?), no revelling in his own wealth whatsoever. Just make more money.
If anything, I pity Bill Gates. He's so busy amassing a fortune, that he'll die before he enjoys it.
Another idiot in power. Seems to be a real trend these days.
(btw, if Bill Gates made a decent OS, why would you buy the next one?)

Bill Gates is having a change of heart. He knows and understands everyone's gripes about windoze and wants to make it right with everyone. He will work diligently on his new OS so everyone will have the OS that they need with no hooplah. I better stop, I think i'm going to throw up...... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I disagree with you, Dominus. Bill seems to know exactly how to enjoy himself. He actually put on a whole major fireworks display on Lake Washington for New Years(and his wedding anniversary) that put the city's display at the Space Needle to shame! He seems to know how to throw a great bash! As far as the yacht comment goes, are you sure about that??

I think it comes down to the fact that BG is a computer geek at heart, and you haven't tried, trust me, once you are in charge of something, you just don't have the freedom (time) to do the things you really like to do.

You have to admit, Balmer is a guy who is hard to hate. He is much more of a fun loving "people person". Also, it wouldn't matter if Gates called himself a janitor, we all know who will be calling the shots. As for running the day to day business, this is way to much for one person, and it was kind of a waste for a person like gates to be trying to do that anyway. No matter how much you may hate him, you have to admit that the guy has some brains and someone like that should be doing something in R+D rather than what he was doing.

Hello,
In order to save his own kingdom, the king sometimes has to abdicate and act behind the throne.

He put balmer in charege so that they have two people capable of being ceo so that when M$ gets split up they can each run one of the resulting companies.

Okay, I jsut can't resist stepping in on this one any longer:
Bill Gates is stepping down in order to devote his efforts directing a highly secret OS code named "Billnux"

He is "stepping down" to "embrace and extend" Transmeta's (and Web Linux') way of doing things.
Oh, and to distance himself (yeah, right) from other M$ woes.
Satan has recalled him in preparation for the upcoming fight against the Nazarene at the End of the World.
...or maybe he's taken up a full time course for his A+? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I have to give the man the credit he deserves
All in all, since I've had my computer and bluddered thru the learning process, which seems to never end, I believe that most of the problems that have occurred with my computer were from lack of knowledge and pushing the wrong button at the wrong time.
After a couple of formats, because of ignorant downloading , not keeping my anti-virus software up to date and letting my daughter on my computer http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif, I've found, with the of Norton System Works that the machine
has become reliable ( almost). Nothing is perfect. But after all the patches and fixes
I feel that my computer, after reading all the problems of other members since last September, is relatively trouble free. And now with " Zone Alarm" program making my conputer vitually invisable to outside probes
and being accessed without my knowledge, I feel my secure and self-confident. Don't get me wrong, there are alot of little problems that I'm having, but I just don't have enough savvy to fix them. I get lucky once in a while, but I'd say that 80-90% of the trouble I cause myself with this machine, unlike a
a straight mechanical device, it is loaded with tricks and traps and unseen pitfalls. But I,m determined to learn and not blame everything on one man. "Render to Caesar what is Caeser's" If you know what I mean. In no way an I defending his business tactics , just giving him credit for his accomplishments.

there are times when we have all hated the OS we are useing, be it MS or any other, we either did something to it or we found a genuine bug, But we have to give BG his due, in well under a half century he has changed the world, I am not sure of the % of windows use, but I don't think there is any one on this board who hasn't used window or MS dos in their life, and he may have stepped down but isn't he still Chairman of MS,like him or not give the man his due, he has made it, and if we are honest with ourselves we would all like to have even 25% of the wealth he has, if his replacement fails he can always step in ( another S.J's) and I give MS one big slap on the back for the way they will try and help out the little guy who is an OEM, many other companies don't want to know if an OEM has any trouble, but I have always had good back up from them, I still prefer to have some one out there who is competeing with them, as it's the only way to force an insentive to improve.
As for braking up MS, this hasn't occured yet and with appeals this could be a long way off, if ever.
Just my 2c worth.
