You're forgeting that the PPRO is the PII.

The PII just has more cache at half speed and the PRO less cache at full speed.

A PII is essentially a PPRO but with mmx added. They do not clock well, especially the higher cache models. And the only chips that are reasonably priced are the PPRO 200's with 256kb cache. Get a Celeron, with a board that will let you go up to P3's at a later date.

You cannot upgrade from a Pentium Pro, there were P2 overdrive processors for a socket 8 board, but I have never seen one.

Don't do it Alpha. I had a serious look at making one before, and am very glad I didn't....

Right.
What about a C266, can get one for $59 US?

I have a AMDk6/2 350 oc to 400 on a p5A
Asus mb,it is running according to sisoft sandra as well as p11 400,never had any problems playing games like quake or half-life so stick with the AMD.

Celeron 266's had no on board cache, go for a 300a minimum. There is a place not too far from me that are getting a shipment of Celeron 366's in that are guaranteed to 550, but these will be around £60 I think. The site is www.overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk) and they seem an ok bunch of guys.

My celeron 300a is running at 473mhz at 2.05v. Don't bother with the PPRO Alpha, it might have been the best in the older generation of hardware, but it is overshadowed by pretty much anything modern. Don't forget a 486DX/4-100 was the best of the bunch, once.

Also PPRO's are very poor at 16-bit instructions. Like DOS games...

A Celeron is a PPRO with MMX, and half as much cache as the basic PPRO but at these speeds it will kick a PPRO out of the room, IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Single Celeron is wimpy.
I'd want dual. PSU clearance problems. My Savage4 only gives 256colours in NT so I'd have to get a V3. I'd Love a BP6, but they have NO DISTRIBUATORS IN IRELAND!!!

PS - I know I can't spell http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

BP6 is about £105 here, I can ship it over if you want.

I think I'll get it from Dabs. I'm going to keep my K6-2 for Linux, as you suggested in a previous post. My parents would be offended if I dumped it completly because the got my the case. Besides, I'd like to have linux.
Budget - £500 PUNTS - £400 Sterling (if all goes well)

1.BP6 - £135 - punts
2.C433 x 2 - £150 punts
3.PC100 - £85 - punts
4.Case - £40 - punts
5. I'll find/scab/nick some drives
TOTAL (drumroll please!) £400 (approx.)

Video card is a problem. I might trade it in for a V3.

Of course, I change ideas like I change my socks, so you'll be sick of me in about 10 minutes!

richamies,

I was going to mention about the 16bit instructions - but I wasn't sure where I'd heard that before.

Alpha - Have a good long think about your mobo choice here. The celeron range seems to be coming to an end in my opinion, and a slot 1 has a lot more options futher down the line.

I just bought a slot 1 mobo and a slotket instead of a 370.

CMonster - I can't remember where I heard about it. I read it in a few magazine articles a couple of years back...

here come my thoughts, don't touch the ppro unless you were gonna run NT or Linux or BeOS on it cause win 95 is ridden with 16 bit code as well. I saw a quad processor alr motherboard on ebay and thought that would be an awesome rc5 cracking machine, but people had bid too high... Also rich is right in getting a slot 1 board, but the dual slot 1 boards are quite expensive... I just bought a 366 guarenteed to go 583 @ 2.0V, (should comes thurs or fri) I bought an alpha cooler and am going to experiment and see if I can hit 616 and 735 with some advanced cooling techniques, I'll be sure to post an article if I do something kewl...

good luck...

mnx

I have an AMD K6-2 350 (non CTX), 32mb RAM and a 32mb Savage4. Should I ditch it for the following;

Dual Pentium Pro 200s overclocked to 233 each
VooDoo3 2000/3000
64mb of EDO

WhAt y'AlL tHiNK??

IMHO it woould be a massive downgrade. If you really want dual processors, get a dual slot 1 board with a pair of slotkits, and some celerons on it. Then, later on when P3's are sensibly priced, swap up to those.

With the P-pro setup you'd be mazed out as soon as you powered it up. Don't do it Alpha!! Please!!

I would have been using NT. Hell, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a quad chip PPRO, though I've never seen one...

I know that S370 is a dead end, but I can get two chips! It'll componsate for a while atleast http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
