Yea, that happened to me when I upgraded my OLD Compaq to a whooping 32mb of ram. Funny thing though, back then I knew s*** about computers, and I didn't understand that Compaq, being evil like they are, pretty much is the definition of parity (correct spelling in this context?)

Just bought a new ABIT BE6 II board, P3 500 and 128mb PC100 SDRAM. I get it all installed , ready to boot up and beeeeeeep beeeeeeep beeeeeep! The dang memory is bad. So now I have to wait 2-3 days to get boted up, let alone overclock it!
I'll post what speed I obtain soon.

That aint' no lie. Compaq is evil. Of all the puters I have worked on Compaq's have been the most evil, cold-hearted, blood-sucking, mind-draining, black holes from which there is no return pieces of cow dung ever!

That happened to me as well, It was because the memory wasn't in the first slot. Did you check this before you sent it back?

Might try this with new memory.

theninja: Why do you think the memory is bad?

Yes I tried all three slots. I took my pc over to a friends house and swapped him memory. My pc booted with his memory, his didn't with mine. I have received the new mem and have it up and running. I have encountered problems however.

First, here's my machine:
P3 500, 128mb RAM, 2 HD's (Maxtor 4.3GB & Maxtor 2.5GB) ZIP drive, cdrom, 33.6 ISA modem, 56k pci modem, SoundBlaster Live XGamer sound card, NIC card, Monster II 8mb & Diamond 2000 vid card.

Here is the first problem. When I reboot I get this error message:
!Warning! Disk boot sector is to be modified. Type "y" to accept, any key to abort. Award software Inc.

I hit y, system pauses and then boots up. I hit any other key, system pauses and boots up. When I reboot again...same message!?

I formated the boot disk and started over from scratch. Same message. System does get past message and runs fine. Just want to know what the ell it's doing.

Second: This is totally wierdin me out.
I shut down the machine (from windoze), system shutsdown fine. I push power button....nothing. Unplug/replug the power cable...nothing. Unhook the mouse, keyboad, and printer cable and push power, wallah, powers up. I've check all power connections, and checked em again. **** thing just don't wanna power up after shutdown unless I unhook some stuff. ???

There is more, but I wnat to resolve these first. Thanks for any help.

theninja: Ah,what slots do you have the cards plugged into? Are you using the ATA66 controllers? You may have your HDs plugged into the wrong controllers. It sounds like your cards aren't in harmony with each other on the board. ABIT boards are kind of quirky in this respect. Read the FAQs on the ABIT site for all the PIII boards. Do you show conflicts in the device manager?

I have th HD's in IDE1 as 4.3 master and 2.5 as slave. IDE2 has the zip and cdrom.
I am gettin conflics on
?PCI mass storage controller
?PCI mass storage controller

But, I haven't installed the Ultra ATA/66 drivers as of yet.

One thing I am curious about too is, I have all the PCI slots and the ISA slot is full. (no AGP vid yet) Since ABIT ripped out one of the ISA cards is PCI slot 5 still shared? Cause I originally put the sound card in PCI slot 5 and was only gettin a beep sound in place of a normal sound. When I swapped places with the 56k the sound worked. (Haven't tried the modem yet, having trouble finding the drivers http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif) I looked in the manual, but couldn't find anything about it being shared.

Thanks

Not sure about placing your cards. I've got a PIII-450 and ABIT BE6-II with V770, MX300, and 3Com Ethernet ISA. Took a few tries to find which slot my soundcard liked.
However, your problem with the boot sector being modified I can help type y to continue I can help on. Go into your bios and disable the virus warning, its default is enabled.
Good Luck with the soundcard

blue screen after blue screen after blue screen. I installed the drivers for the ATA/66 controlers and man oh man did I have problems. Seems (after reading the manual) you can't load the drivers for both of them at the same time. ooops! Anyway I don't have any ATA/66 devices so I disabled it in the bios.

And no more "disk boot sector error" after turning virus scan off. Thanks Moose http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

So far most everything is running fine, just have to re-install everything!

I still have that power button problem though. Any ideas?

I have heard about alot of problems with the be-6 II's highpoint controller(ultra66),I have even heard that it is less stable then the bf-6 because of it.Could be BS though.
If you are gonna OC past 133FSB you'll have to more then likely disable DMA at all for your maxtors to work,I have heard mountains about thier inaboility to handle out of spec PCI speed when DMA,let alone UDMA is enabled.

Good luck,I have the bf-6 myself, nice FSB choices huh?
