It is with much gratitude to all here that I humbly report a succesful o/c of my AMD K6-350 to 450. (!!!!!)Being a rookie, I realize that my success is probably due to a fluke- having a really robust chip for starters, coupled with sage advice from sysopt members.

My system: Asus P5A-B super 7 mobo,128Ram,Matrox G400.

As per the suggestions by Cmonster and RobFM to Alpha (best of luck, pal), I upped my cpu from 3.5x100 at 2.2V to 4x100 at 2.2V no problem; next, I went to 4.5x100 and settled at 2.5 volts-it seems to be stable.
I am leary of putting the case back on( I currently have a 12 inch fan cranking down on the box). The closest thing to thermal paste that I found was something called Lith-ease (white Lithium grease) that I bought at a local Canadian Tire:I applied a thin layer to my heatsink with a Q-tip and smushed it around when placing it on the cpu.

At this point I have several questions. I read a suggestion here about an alpha pfh6035 heatsink kit with a Y-tech fan (at the millisec site) and I am wondering about its size. My videocard is less than a cm away from my heatsink/fan. Do I have enough space?

Also, my mobo has a max setting of 550MHz (5.5x100MHz): what suggestions can anyone offer as to what chip may be the best value to be ultimately overclocked to these settings? (AMD 400,450, 500?) and where is the best (ie cheapest) place from which to order?

(by the way, can you tell that I'm just a little bit hooked?)

Much love

I'm one of the lucky guys(?) running a k6-II 400 at 550 stable. I personally think these chips are absolutely GREAT! The best way to check stability of these overclocked beasts is a hard processor intensive test, either use the CSC/RC5 key program at www.distributed.net (http://www.distributed.net) for a couple of hours, or I can put a copy of PC-Check, which IBM use to test their returned goods on my site for you to download. You can set this to test all aspects of the cpu for either a given set of passes, or a set time.
Personally, I left my machine on for 8 hours with this test but as a rule of thumb, leaving it going for 10 minutes will give you a pretty good idea. I would still reccomend leaving it going for a few hours though.
Does it feel **** WONDERFUL clocking these chips up or what?!?

Ive got the same board and a voodoo3 2000 card and I have about 1mm clearance between it and the Alpha. take some electrical tape and cover the end of the card to make sure if it does come in contact you done short anything and it's fine http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif and it just fits it's tight but it works http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Im' running the 450 @ 550mhz 5.0 X 110 @ 2.5 volts http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I've tryed the 5.5X setting and got nothing ?
not sure why as of yet but with PC-133 memery this board will do 124 mhz stable with the right cards in it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Outstanding job!

Not that you would really need it right now, but if your set the multiplier to 2x it acts as a 6x for the K6-2 chips. It may be an option for you when the faster chips come out.

Way to go Sharky!
For the lowest prices on parts, try www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

CMonster:
Does the 2X mult work on all K6's? I tried it on my 500 w/Epox MVP3G5 board & no joy. It would be nice to hit 600+ http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks everybody, this is ridiculously fun.
Incidentally, has anyone ever tried (or heard about) overclocking the Matrox Millenium G400?

(Also, I seem to be having trouble downloading sandra and some other stuff- I posted my query on the tech support post if anyone wants to take a crack at solving my problem)

Thanks again,
Sharky
