I seems like a whole millennium has passed since I built my last PC, a 233 with a Voodoo 2 and a massive 64 megs of ram, it was the dogs bollericks. Alas, I recently realised that getting 20 fps out of UT at 640x480 was a pile of pants, it was time to demote my trusty 233 from games machine to lowly web browser and start digging deep into my piggy bank again.

So here's the situation I've got 2000 squids to spend ( $3,200 ) and I want to build a new PC with a serious attitude problem, I want UT and Quake3 bashing my eye balls on a 21" monitor at 1024x768x32 @ 60+ fps with full on eye candy and enough decibels to wake up the whole neighbourhood.

I’m not afraid to over clock, in fact in true Tim Taylor style I’m thinking about building my own custom case, strapping on a few vacuum cleaner motors on the side and passing 20 meters of conductive hose through a fridge to cool the air down ( only kidding, but then having a fridge next to the PC would save me a frag or two when I needed another cold Stella, hmmmm... )

I have to admit to being a computer programmer so I'll need a biggish , speedy hard drive plus back up storage, I can then pretend to do the occasional bit of work ( and justify spending all this money )

I was thinking about a 550E FC over clocked to 733 on a 133 FSB with an NV10 DDR but I couldn’t decide on which mobo was the best, I also thought about an Athlon and the golden fingers, but then the mobos that will draw the true power out of the Athlon are still vapourware, any way…..

The challenge may you accept it:- spend my 2K and spec me a complete PC system that you think would rock.

All right, about the monitor, if you're only gonna run @1024x768, don't waste your money on a 21"... go for a 19 incher. Trust me. Hey, 1024x758 looks nice on a 12 inch. Right now im on a 15 incher (my 19" blew... thank god for warranty, 4 days till new one gets here), but with my 19", I run 1600x1200 on everything except FSIM 2000 pro. But as soon as voodo05 five comes out, im on her (64 meg version, 128 is like 700 bucks) Skimp on a video card now, then in march-may, whenever price is right, get a nice one, you wno't be sorry you waited.

Here are just some suggestions. Whatever you do, make sure to use SCSI drives rather than IDE. You also might want to buy a DVD drive, or setup a triboot system with Win9x, Win2k, Linux, and maybe even BeOS.
