overclocking a cyrix m2 300mhz

Has anyone outhere overclocked this cpu ???
i could only get a measly 33mhz more out of this piece of s@#!#. (3.5 X75) has anyone had better luck. i tried overclockin it on 83mhz bus but no success. (had 366, but windows did not load.)Mine is now at 33mhz running at 2.8 v and at 75mhz bus speed.

Hi,

those 2.9V Cyrixes don't overclock well, they don't have much headroom.

But what's the point in calling it a piece of ****? It works as advertized, it's the cheapest processor available, so what's your point, really!

Anyway, you're supposed to run them at 2.9V, not 2.8. Plus you're not saying what mainboard you run it on - if that's an Intel chipset, then no wonder 83 MHz doesn't work well.

What motherboard do you have??? You might be able to slide an AMD processor right in there and be amazed at the increase in performance.
Go to your mother board's web site and see which are supported and if a bios upgrade is available.

have have an m571 mobo. it supports amd k6, not amd k62/3. is there a bios update ??
i'm ineterested in buying an amd k62 400 as the price is reasonably cheap. i've checked the site with no luck.

Hi again,

if that M571 is at least v3.2a, then you have 2.2V support. Latest BIOS (from www.pcchips.com.tw) (http://www.pcchips.com.tw)) supports K6-2 and K6-III alright.
However, the voltage regulators are as old as the board design is, so don't exaggerate on the target frequency.

A good cheap match is a K6-2/333 run at 4.5x75 or 4.0x83. 380 MHz type at 5.0x75 or 4.5x83 would also be OK. Next step, 450 MHz at 6.0x75 or 5.5x83 draws more power than the voltage regulators were designed for, _I_ wouldn't do that.

350 MHz is unreachable, K6-2/366 are rare, and /400 is only reachable at 6.0x66.

With the onboard shared-memory VGA, prefer the higher bus clock for much better performance. 83 MHz is available officially from M571 v7.0 onward. Older boards have it inofficially, but usually are stable at 83. Jumpers are 1-2 1-2 2-3 2-3.

6.0x multiplier is the same jumper setting as 2.0x.

I ahd the 300mhz cyrix on my Amptron 9600 board, PcChips 575.Anyway dont even try overclocking it.I got a amd 350 chip and its running at 366mhz.I would have to look at settings but i got em from one of these guys on this board. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Amptron 9600 isn't PC-Chips M575! Don't get tempted to use the latter's BIOS ...

If you're into moderate overclocking, why not give 375/83 a try with your 350/100? Your board does 83 MHz with proper 33 MHz PCI and IDE speed, and is designed for 83 MHz operation, so give it a try. That'll be a lot faster than 366/66 because of the raised L2 cache and DRAM speed.

i went into my bios and saw that it was version 1.19 ??? what do i need to have an amd k62 400 to work??? upgrade or what ??
if so how do i upgrade my bios??

Your _setup_ is v1.19. Nothing to do with the BIOS code itself, just its visual presentation.

Look at the top of the screen while the system tests its RAM - it says "PM9600 mm/dd/yyyy" there, or "Release mm/dd/yyyy".

That's your BIOS release date, and the latest two were from Jan 1999 and May 1999. The Jan 1999 one is available from www.amptron.com, (http://www.amptron.com,) the May one was seen on a PC-Chips server.

Oops, Kev, you are the one with the M571 - same advice, but the latest BIOS is at http://www.pcchips.com.tw/bios.html.

Another thread found that apparently the M571 won't do 75 MHz with AMD processors (SiS chipset used had the 75/83 MHz support done for Cyrix processors), so you'll be "stuck" at 400=6.0x66 (still not bad for a board that was sold as 300 MHz max :-).

Use the money saved from not buying a 450 MHz to get a K6-III/400 2.2V :-)
