This 400 is as bad as the 333, wont run on any, ANY, fsb other than 66mhz. I feel so **** used! Someone help me! PLEASE! Sterling_Aug 12-28-1999, 06:34 PM If you have "Soft Menu" BIOS setup, then go into your overclocking menu and set "speed error hold" to DISABLED. If this is enabled, it will reset to the default settings for whatever processor you install and you will never be able to overclock. KeithV 12-28-1999, 07:25 PM Ohh come on, I'm not that stupid. lol plucky duck 12-28-1999, 07:42 PM Ok there buddy, if you ask a question listen to the answers and please don't going off being a smartass 'cause it won't help very much in getting any replies of suggestive help to your post. If you're such a smart *** and know all the answers, then why ask the question, ya know what I mean? Got it? Good. This BBS is probably one of the better, if not the best, in terms of a well-diversed knowledge base of many computer users acting in goodwill to provide computer-related technical aid to others, so please be appreciative and respectful when making posts in these forums. Thankyou. In my opinion, the aid I get in this BBS is tops compared to those answering-machine based tech or the other tech supports that lack technical expertise. I've been thru many of them, and believe me some of them don't know what a computer is (a bit exaggerated, but you get my drift). As far as your situation goes, in order for us to help you we need more info on your computer's specs. List 'em here and we'll see how we can help. Anyways, happy holidays everybody. Sterling_Aug 12-28-1999, 08:44 PM You must be if you can't overclock any of your processors. I have every one of my 4 machines running 12-57% faster than their standard settings. I guess that means I know more than you do about o/c'ing. If you want the correct level of help, maybe you should list all of your degree's in computer engineering so we know not to answer your questions with a simple reply. KeithV 12-28-1999, 09:44 PM First of all, I'm sorry if I sounded like an ***. I really am. I wasn't really looking for help because I know everything I could do, and I've done what I feel like doing, other then setting up some physco water cooling system. But like I said, it was just one of those pulling my hair out posts. All 3 processors I've tried on this mb (BX6.2) wont do anything over the norm. And it aint my devices cause I've been though a whole cycle of stuff in the past 6 months. Only thing I still have are the drives. If you seriously want my specs.. Abit BX6.2 Celeron 400 PPGA (Stepping 5 I believe, MAYLAY) 160mb of ram. 1st stick - 64MB Thosiba PC100 ECC 2nd Stick - 32MB Thosiba PC100 ECC 3rd stick - 32MB Generic PC66 4th stick - same as above Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer D-Link DE-528 Ethernet PCI Adapter Maxtor 6GB Diamond Max ATA33 Fujitsu 3GB HP CD-Writer+ 7500 Yes, I have used only the PC100 ram for any higher bus speeds. My previous two processors, a Cel 333 SECC, and P2 233. Now, on every one I've tried EVERYTHING short of an elaborate cooling system. Most I've done in cooling is my to Gama 28 blowers and 50mm (I think) fans for exaust. Then a stock heatsink and fan for all my cpus. Keep this in mind though, when at home I run with my case open, and my house if COLD.. I mean really cold. And I usually work on my system at night. In fact it's so cold that I sleep in like 4 layers of clothes (too cheap to run heater, lol). With this new cpu, I've tried 75, 83, and 100. At voltages from 2.00 to 2.3. I've tried disabling cache, using the delay, and doing pretty much everything I've ever read to help. The farthest I've ever got with any of them was 75 or 83 into windows.. begins to load my systray and then locks up, and Fs with my reg. Anyway, I hope this is a bit better than my last post... daveleau 12-28-1999, 09:47 PM Man this is one of the first times I have ever heard anyone get flamed on theis site. I guess I was equally surprised at his reply to Sterling's help. I second the idea tht this BBS has the most help for the buck. Other sites (excluding Host and MrC which aren;t as busy as Sysopt) flame at the drop of a hat whether people deserve it or not. Great advice and nice people here. Please respect those who try with limited knowledge of someone else;s system. daveleau 12-28-1999, 09:52 PM I doubt you'd have that much bad luck and get 3 unclockable procesors. Seeing what you have done, I would assume there is something wrong with the mobo. Other than that, I am an AMD overclocker and can't gve any more advice. i will leave it to the many others who have better experience. Good luck. Dave KeithV 12-28-1999, 09:52 PM Come on man, I wasn't flaming him! Just simmer down people, at the time it didn't seem like I was being rude.. I mean the speed hold error thing is rather obvious.. to me anyway.. *ducks* chipbgt 12-28-1999, 10:36 PM well...something was burnin..... but i dont think it was keith.... [This message has been edited by chipbgt (edited 12-28-1999).] 800XL 12-28-1999, 11:01 PM I have handled dozens of Celerons (SECC and PPGA) and I have yet to come across one that would not go at least to 75Mhz bus, including several 466Mhz chips. You can imagine that I am boggled by your problem. There is one thing about your config that sticks out though. To me this is as obvious as speed error hold, so forgive me if you've already covered this ground. Take out the PC66 RAM. While you're at it, take out all but the 64meg PC100 stick at set the CAS latency to 3 for good measure. You may have a memory problem not a CPU problem. When messing with 75 and 83, drop to PIO4 on the hard drive to avoid probs with the registry (duh? just covering the bases) though that could be tied to the memory prob as well. Also keep AGP at 2/3. Keep cracking at it. You could just be the most unlucky overclocker in the world, but the streak has to end sometime. Target 12-28-1999, 11:07 PM Bad karma maybe?...... shew Keith, 0-3 is a record that would depress most of us. Frankly, I don't get it. I've successfully OC'd several CPU's on my BX6.2, with my PIII-450 currently singing along at 558Mhz (124Mhz FSB). You listed the 333, and now the 400 as two of the three CPU's you have tried....arguably not the easiest CPU's to over-clock in the first place because of the fixed multipliers, but you should have had some success. Given that the mulitplier is locked (6x) on your current CPU...... I'd say that 75Mhz FSB is a likely over-clock, 83Mhz FSB has an outside chance, and 100Mhz FSB is probably impossible. Have you just given up or are you willing to keep at it? If so, I know that there are several here (myself included) that would be willing to put some time in on it with you. KeithV 12-28-1999, 11:07 PM I've tried every mem combo in the book. And that ram is **** good ram. I've also set it to cas 3, tried pretty much everything. Havn't messed with the drives yet, I should give that a whirl. I'm just not to thrilled about more registry errors if it dosn't work. And yes, I am very unlucky, everything related to computers, and I mean everything, that I've ever purchased has always either been broken, or just kinda sub-standard (like my cel 333, made in *shudders* costa rica). I am considering buying a new mb.. perhaps the ZM6, then I can just get the PPGA copps if I really feel the need. 1GHZ P3 baby!!!!!!1 Yea right.. I'll buy a P3 1GZ and it'll run at 999.14mhz. lol KeithV 12-28-1999, 11:11 PM Holy *(@&#*()!& I ran 3D Mark 2000 again thinking the first test was flawed or something... with 333 - 3669 Marks with 400 - 2887 & 2995 Ummm, hello?!? I bought a FASTER processor. YEESH. Thanks a lot Target, I have no plans to stop.. I mean, I paid for a 400mhz CPU! Not a 400mhz CPU! lol Sterling_Aug 12-29-1999, 08:28 AM I would guess your motherboard is not set up correctly. I have a BX-6 rev 2 in which I was able to overclock a Celeron 300A slot 1 to 504 MHz, a Celeron 400 slot 1 up to 500 MHz, and I am now running a stock P3-450 at 580 MHz. richamies 12-29-1999, 11:53 AM I really dont feel I should be posting in here, as I do not know enough about celerons to offer any advice, but as the only way to overclock a celeron is to increase the FSB, and your half your memory is rated at 66mhz, maybe you should remove it before trying to overclock? And if you are worried about data corruption on your hard drives, why not unplug them and run some burn in software from a floppy whilst testing/checking your overclocked cpu? Just a thought, probably 20 miles from the right answers, but just my, little, underknowledged, thoughts. KeithV 12-29-1999, 12:59 PM removing all but the good memory was the first thing I tried. My old PC66 sticks are peices of ****. Motherboard set up wrong? Hmm. I suppose that could be, but I've been doing this for a long time, and the only times that I've had problems with the hardware (don't get my started with the software, ohh lord) is when I either forgot to plug in the **** thing, or I didn't have the power cable to the mb, or I didn't have the processor in all the way (hey, it was my first time with a slot 1) Dkay 12-29-1999, 02:04 PM Keith its heat. Change the heatsink to a better one. Even though most can make the 75 FSB with stock cooling guess yours can't The problem here is obviously heat KeithV 12-29-1999, 02:10 PM Yea... I thought about that. But the heatsink is cool to the touch and my house is freezing. There isint one part in my computer that is even warm to the touch (cept the drives). Perhaps the peltier system I am gonna set up will help Target 12-29-1999, 02:15 PM Well, if you are up for it, we can still try to get your current setup running faster in the mean time...... Check your email, just dropped you a note bout this. deep_sky 12-29-1999, 02:20 PM keithV... my heatsink is also cool to the touch and when i tried to overclock, it was still cool to the touch. my cpu temp is almost 100 F. a cool heatsink does not mean that you do not have temp problems. do you have any temp sensing devices in your system?? Nathan G 12-29-1999, 05:08 PM The heatsink being "cool to the touch" may indicate improper mating between heatsink and cpu. ( maybe time for thermal paste/lapping??) KeithV 12-29-1999, 06:13 PM I don't have a sensor for anything other then the one that I can stick in the sinks so... Also, I am using thermal tape, I know it isint as good as paste, but I don't plan on having this sink very long anyway. perhaps I will just not mess with a peltier and just get a nice big sink/fan combo. Rob Q 12-29-1999, 08:27 PM I have a celeron 400 o/c to 500. I had the same problem when windows loaded it would load almost everything but it would freeze then I would reboot and it would try to correct the reg. The solution to this problem is to turn the dma off on your hard drive in windows. Few Maxtor hard drives are able to take 41 pci bus speeds. So set your cpu to 400, then go to window and uncheck the dma on your hard drive then overclock see if that works. CMonster 12-30-1999, 01:13 AM I'm confused, does the system not even boot at higher speeds or just not go into Windows? Perhaps this is just a motherboard problem: If it doesn't boot perhaps there is some strange problem with the chips that control bus speed - maybe the the clock generator is "rusted" into the 66mhz position and freaks out if you try to set it higher..... and, hey...no coments from all youse hardware lizards out there... I describe um in the best nomenclature I can. [This message has been edited by CMonster (edited 12-29-1999).] KeithV 12-30-1999, 01:18 AM Ok, at 75 and 83 it makes it to windows, and logs in, and even begins to load my system tray stuff... but then locks up and messes up my reg. At 100 it posts, then starts to boot windows, but give me a reg error in dos. Says I need to run regscan or something. I have been giving thought into a new board.. perhaps a ZM6 so I can just do away with the slocket, and buy a coppermine later sometime. SysOpt.com
