Can the new PPGA chips be overclocked as readily as the Slot 1's? I have a Celeron 300A and have been running flawlessly at 450mhz. My buddy is upgrading his computer and I am not sure whether to reccomend an overclocked Celeron 366, 400, 450 or to just tell him to get a PIII. It sounds like the 400 will predictably go to 500mhz at a 83mhz bus speed with a chance of going to 600mhz at 100mhz, but not as predictable. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 366@550 with fsb @ 100. Runs great and stable.

c366 @ 550 very possible with good cooling, good pc100 memory and the right motherboard.
If you plan on using existing pc66 memory and motherboard then go with the 500.

Couple more questions:
1. I have the ASUS motherboard and have been happy with it. I noticed a lot of you guys reccomend the new ABIT BE6-2. If you were to start from scratch, which one would you get?
2. Does anyone know how predictable a 400a chip is to 600 (100mhz bus speed, right?)
3. How much does the 100mhz bus speed mess up your other devices. I noticed someone mentioned that some bios's let you turn down the speed of the PCI devices (like 2/3).
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

1) I would go with the Abit. Softmenu can't be beat, and I have always found Abit boards to be very stable and of good quality. Not to say that Asus doesn't make great boards, but I myself prefer the Abit.
2) Chances of getting a 400 to 600 are slim to nill. To even acheive this speed you would need active cooling, or some sort of super cooling device. It's not really worth it, unless your a hobbyist.
3) 100mhz bus doesn't phaze your PCI devices. They run at the same speed they would run on 66mhz bus (33mhz). Yes, you do have to change the AGP speed to 2/3, as 1/1 would mean your running your agp card a tad high. Again this is a good reason to get the Abit boards, you can easily change the agp speed in the bios.

I have running a Cel 400 ppga on 600mhz
In win98 everything works great.
But with gameplaying it hangs up
not all the games, quake runs fine
Toca2 freeze
I have a Gigabyte mb with slot1 ppga conv.
The Celeron runs on a core of 2,3v
Large Heatsink and a 40 cub fan on 17 volt
So if i just work with notepad and paint
I can run this thing on 600mhz
great isn't it
So if you wonna go safe
buy a 366 o a PIII
